Hazardous California forests loom this summer say officials

California forestry officials warn this summer may be the most hazardous in history for timberlands. Moisture from recent weeks helps little to alter the outlook. Some forest areas could close to visitors while campgrounds stay open as long as possible. Contingency fire plans include bringing in personnel from other regions.

Scientists warn saccharin cancer risk from small soda intake

A coalition of scientists and congressmen led by Ralph Nader warned that consuming less than two cans of diet soda daily could cause cancer, challenging the soft drink industry's claim that up to 800 cans pose the risk. The briefing cautioned about saccharin, the artificial sweetener heading to over the counter status.

Parking petitions rejected by downtown parking commission

Downtown Merchants Association President Bill Dolan failed to present petitions with 1100 signatures to the parking advisory commission. The panel rejected all five requests, including free Saturday parking and all day lot permits, mostly by unanimous vote.

Carter pledges national health plan and welfare overhaul

President Carter told the United Auto Workers convention that a national health insurance proposal will be submitted early next year and the welfare system must be redesigned. He warned hard choices are needed to balance the budget by 1981 while maintaining growth and efficiency, and pressed for energy and air quality measures amid drought in California.

President vows to sign tax cut bill into law

President Carter said he will sign a permanent $4 billion tax cut through higher standard deductions. The plan will simplify taxes for about 50 million standard-deduction filers and largely benefit low income families, with 3.3 million taxpayers paying no federal tax. The bill, approved by Congress, carries fewer special-interest provisions and was pitched as economic stimulus.

Vocational Career Fair Opens With Hands on Skills Show

The Fifth annual Lake and Mendocino County Vocational Career Fair begins at 8 a.m. at the Ukiah Fairgrounds with junior high and high school students displaying technical and home making arts. Demonstrations include automotive trouble-shooting, building construction, welding, cosmetology, carpentry, fashion, cooking and more over two days, with awards Thursday at 1 p.m. at Willow Tree Theatre.
