Ukiah Protesters March Courthouse to Last Seven Days

Royston Grange Burns After River Plate Collision

The British freighter Royston Grange with 63 crew and 11 passengers aboard burned and sank after colliding with a Liberian tanker in the River Plate. Eight tanker crew members also died. the ship carried Argen tine beef to England. A survivor from the tanker, Lo Kam Wai of Hong Kong, said the freighter veered into the tanker’s path.

Taxable county sales reach 109 million in 1971

Mendocino County taxable sales totaled 109,556,000 in 1971 led by Ukiah 36,416,000 Fort Bragg 14,990,000 and Willits 11,002,000. California overall taxable transactions rose 8.3 percent to 46.8 billion as durable goods and big-ticket items drove gains aided by GM strike rebound and expected tax relief.

Clausen seeks funds for coast and dams in northern California

Representative Don Clausen urged Congress to provide 50 000 for a coast study to create harbors of refuge from Fort Bragg to the North Coast. He backs 400 000 for Coyote Valley Dam maintenance and 295 000 to continue surveys for a comprehensive northern California stream development plan.

Court halts Ridgewood sales in bond and breach case

Superior Judge A B Broaddus signs a temporary restraining order blocking Ridgewood Park Land Company and affiliates from sales at Ridgewood south of Willitson Highway 101. A show cause hearing is set for May 26 at 9 30 a m. The district attorney seeks forfeiture of performance bonds totaling 200 000 and labor-material bonds totaling 240 000 amid allegations of breached contracts with the county.
