Ukiah Hosts Elementary Music Festival Thursday

Ukiah businessmen seek off ramp study on North Freeway
Eight Ukiah firm leaders appeared before the Board of Supervisors with attorney James Busch to petition the Division of Highways for a feasibility study toward constructing an off ramp from the North Freeway to connect Orr Springs Road via Pinoleville Road. The petition, signed by 24 supporters including Ed Gillespie Crawford Lumber Alfred Weger Antoni Truck Lines Walter Heady Wilshire Oil Jack Smalley Borden's Dairy and many others, was accepted and a letter to the Division of Highways ordered drafted.

Westport Man Found Dead in Pickup on Highway 1
Coroner Reno Bartolomie reported Harold William Reid 66 of Westport was found dead in his pickup against a roadbank on Highway 1 south of Pine Beach around 10 am. Reid likely suffered a heart attack while driving alone. He is survived by his widow Thelma. Body taken to Canaar Funeral Home Fort Bragg pending autopsy.

Stranded Fishermen Rescued Near Lake Mendocino
Four fishermen spent about five hours without a light or matches while drifting along the southeast shore of Lake Mendocino between 7 p.m. and midnight. Sheriff deputies rescued Bob Freeman, 44, his son Mike Abbott, 15, and two companions Jeff and Mike Gasper, ages 10 and 15, after learning of their disappearance. The group had started near the Coyote Dam spillway. their motor failed and they drifted to the southeast shore before deputies guided them back to their vehicle.

Passersby Ignore Struggling Teenage Girl's Cries for Help
In the Bronx a 15 passersby did not aid a naked 18 year old girl attacked by Daniel G. Coughlin, a 26 year old salesman. Police arrested him on rape and felonious assault charges after two officers responded. The victim, who was treated at Fordham Hospital, said he assaulted her, threatened murder, and fled toward the street.
