An ad hoc group plans a Boonville conference June 24 25 to open channels of communication among Mendocino County residents. David Richardson says 52000 people in 3000 square miles share problems and hopes while hostility and mis information hinder unity.
Sacramento reports veteran Assemblyman Frank P. Belotti denies endorsing any candidate for the Assembly seat before the June primary. He cites fairness and avoids influencing races, reaffirming his stance after Gary Antolini appeared at a Ukiah event in place of Belotti.
The U S Army Corps of Engineers reports reduced inflow into the Russian River and a minimum outflow of 25 to 30 cubic feet per second to permit channel clearing in Sonoma County. Normal outflow resumption is set for May 10.
Fire dispatch notes two incidents. On Wednesday at 4 30 p m a fire at the old Crofoot mill on Lake Mendocino Drive caused sparks in salvage material with no damage. At 5 18 p m a fire in Sandra Forsbergs auto at Forks Ranch Market on N State Street caused minor damage.
Fair through Friday in Northwestern California with coastal overcast and partial afternoon clearing. Cooler readings in coastal valleys today and Friday. Ukiah expected 80 high 45 low. Rainfall figures show 24.80 inches so far this year, last year 38.12 inches.
City officials and Ukiah Solid Wastes report progress on a three to five year plan to run the dump and curbside pickup with monthly billing starting July. The arrangement shifts payment timing to utilities style monthly charges and sets new cost sharing, while preserving service levels for residential commercial and industrial customers.
For six months ten Mendocino County women travel weekly to Eye and Ear Hospital for legal abortions and sterilizations arranged by the Pregnancy Control Center. Crutchlow notes most patients are white unmarried women ages 18 to 25, referred by doctors or health authorities. The center, at 1801 Bush Street, promotes low costs with early abortions at 187 dollars and late term at 390 dollars, screened by a hospital abortion committee.
UPI reports Senator Hubert Humphrey led in Ohio with 454,772 votes to McGovern 431,714 as 95 percent of polls counted. Muskie 97,530 Jackson 88,459 McCarthy 24,491. Strong support from Summit and Montgomery counties and United Rubber Workers aided Humphrey while a Cleveland court ruling limited federal action on impounded ballots.
Festival 72 parade on Saturday June 3 features theme Teach the World to Sing and is sponsored by Ukiah Jaycees. 25 bands already entered, sizes range 32 to 137, with 123 entries last year for Festival 71. Deadline for parade entries is May 25 with details to Parade Committee Ukiah Jaycees P.O. Box 362 Ukiah.
Congressman Don Clausen announced the U S Army Corps of Engineers will reopen bidding for the Noyo River channel dredging project after initial bids from small firms were rejected for being above estimates. Invitations go out May 8, bids open May 23, with no size restriction and expedited processing promised.
PG&E filed an environmental impact report to drill offshore near Point Arena to obtain geological data for a potential submerged pipelines system for a proposed nuclear power plant. A drilling barge and support vessels would operate at about 160 feet depth, with 25 cores three inches wide. The commission set a hearing for May 25 in Sacramento.
An urgent notice states the carrier will collect payments today and in upcoming months. The message asks recipients to cooperate when the driver first calls and to arrange payable motor routes and advance payments as needed.
