Ukiah Band Auction Aims to Fund Victoria Trip

Ukiahi's Wildcat Marching Band seeks 5000 dollars to cover a four day Victoria Day festival trip to British Columbia in May. The fundraiser auction and rummage sale starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the C&S Supply warehouse on Wabash Ave with donations being organized by Ukiah Band Boosters and band members including Drum Major Steve Walls.

Suspension Upholds Feliz Suspension By 4-1 Vote

Four Mendocino County civil service commission members backed the suspension of John Feliz an assessor office appraiser for 30 days after his Feb 26 suspension and March 19 firing over alleged real estate related conflicts. Feliz attorney plans a mandamus action arguing lack of due process as a CSC hearing on dismissal looms for April 26.

ITT Sought CIA Channel to Fund Chile Opponents in 1970

Senate investigators released testimony from CIA agent William V. Broe revealing that ITT offered to channel money to opponents of Chilean President Salvador Allende in 1970. Broe, head of CIA clandestine services for the Western Hemisphere, said he rejected Harold S. Geneen's proposal at a July 16, 1970 meeting at the Sheraton Carlton Hotel in Washington.

United Tribes Pomo Chapter to hold March for Justice

United Tribes Pomo Chapter schedules a Saturday march in Lakeport starting 1 p.m. from the old high school to municipal park, with a rally to follow. Over 150 people expected. Parade chairman Anthony Amante says the aim is equal protection under the law and safeguarding rights. A similar march occurred in Ukiah last week. A chapter meeting is planned for April 2 in Santa Rosa.

Heart attack claims Mendocino official Edward Hall

Edward H. Hall 44 assistant Mendocino County administrator died after an apparent heart attack at his home on Redwood Avenue Ukiah. He was stricken at 2 35 a m and pronounced dead at Ukiah General Hospital. A former Army captain he served 19 years with the county and was active in the Knights of Columbus. Survived by his wife Helen of Santa Rosa and two children. Services at Zimmerman Mortuary with date to be announced.

Last American troops leave Vietnam at 5 53 p.m.

The official end of the U.S. role in Vietnam came as the final group of 2,501 American troops departed Saigon’s Tan Son Nhut Air Base. One POW remained in Viet Cong hands, and 1,333 Americans still listed as missing.

Second Miss Mendocino County Pageant Glamour Takes Center Stage

Area residents rush for advance tickets as two days remain before the Miss Mendocino County Pageant at Carl Purdy hall. Contestants vie for the title a college scholarship and a chance to enter Miss California. Entertainment features Gene Moreton and Lonnie Moreton Dancers with John King, Mrs. Gordon Foote, and the Ukiah Stage Band. A panel of judges includes Gary Queale and Gene Schnell. Miss Mendocino County 1972 Kathy Svendson will crown her successor. Contestants include Theresa Hurley Debra Clark Jonny Sasser Linda Thornquist Elizabeth Heimiller Linda Buletti Janet Smith and Emily Broaddus. Theme is A Moment to Cherish.

Getting tipsy for safetys sake

A Ukiah area group of law enforcement and justice personnel tested alcohol tolerance in a four day CHP and Justice Department workshop at the Fairgrounds Home Arts building. About 15 participants, three reached legal intoxication, others felt unfit to drive though not legally drunk. The breath analyzer records blood alcohol content for court use. the test showed individual variability in driving capacity.
