Tutors workshop planned for April in Ukiah

Ukiah Adult Literacy Council hosts a tutor training workshop April 7 and 8 at the Presbyterian Church. Sessions run 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. Saturday. Council members met last week at Marjorie Burr’s home to plan, with 20 tutors serving 25 adults across Mendocino and Lake Counties.

Closely Watched Trains to Open Friday Screening

Milosa a 17 year old trainee at a provincial railway station under German occupation in Czechoslovakia is the subject of Closely Watched Trains which won best foreign film. The Jim Menel directed feature will be shown Friday at 8 p.m. in Ukiah Fairgrounds Junior Building as a Rancho Mariposa School benefit for Spanish and German classes. The Golden Fish, Edward Secham's award winning film, accompanies the program. Admission is 1 for students and 150 for adults.

A tempting dessert option features green apple pie chosen to celebrate St Patrick s Day. The dish blends tart apples with a sweet filling and a flaky crust for a festive treat.

Firebelles Food Booth Raises Over $160 at Ball

Ukiah Firebelles earned more than $160 from a food booth at the Firemen's Ball on Saturday afternoon and evening. Treasurer Shirley Orbaun hesitated to confirm totals. the group had stocked 200 tacos and 200 sandwiches and bought 50 pounds of popcorn. Most tacos and sandwiches sold, with crab sandwiches and salami and cheese the top items.

Holmes Sentor wedding set for April fifteenth

Willits High School graduates Jenny Lyn Holmes and Charles E. Sentor will marry April 15 at the Willits Methodist Church. The bride's parents, Mr and Mrs Gil Holmes, announced the engagement. The bride, a 1970 graduate, works at her father's business while taking classes at the Ukiah ROCC. The groom, a 1968 graduate and Vietnam era Army veteran, works at Little Lake Industries in Ukiah.

Comptche marks Lena Meshishnek 80th birthday with 125 guests

Mrs Lena Meshishnek of Comptche celebrated her 80th birthday on March 2 with a surprise Potluck at Comptche Grange Hall. Around 125 friends relatives and neighbors traveled from the Bay Area Ukiah Mendocino Fort Bragg Little River and Merced to attend. A sixty fold mural depicting her early life was created by local artists Jody Evans Ruth Haley Judy Shandel Judy MacDonald Nan C Tunzi and Jean Petersen and performed by Tyne Darlene Judy Cor deiro Anita Greenough Alice Holmes Ellen Hollister and Henry Johnson while Signe MacDonald narrated. A longtime friend had not seen her in fifty five years. She received a money tree a potted azalea and other gifts.

Fourth Grade Breakfast Aims for San Francisco Trip

Redwood Valley School hosts a ham and egg breakfast with hotcakes juice and coffee on Saturday morning. Adults pay 1, children 50 cents and preschoolers 25 cents. Proceeds fund the class trip to San Francisco. Mrs Vernon Harper and Mrs Leo Nunnemaker organize the event for Mrs Verna Watkins class who needs about 140 dollars.

Ukiah District Considers 5.9 Million School Bond

Dr. DeMartini and Nancy March outline the 5.9 million dollar school bond election set for March 21. Films show crowded Ukiah High classes and proposed classroom designs. A 1967 master plan spurred by committees aims to move the high school, renovate current buildings for a junior high, and relocate Yokayo pupils to Pomolita, with capacity planned for 20 years barring rapid population growth. Nancy March leads a lively Q and A session.

Mendocino Women Attend California Demeter Conference in Napa

A motorcade of 24 Mendocino County Club of Demeter members joined 92 attendees at the second annual California Clubs of Demeter conference in Napa. Delegates from Ukiah Willits Fort Bragg Boonville Redwood Valley and other counties represented. The event featured Hawaiian decor, greetings from the Brazilian Embassy, and plans for future expansion including northern and southern Humboldt reorganization and new county admittances.
