California Assembly OKs AFDC bill to maintain aid for transitioning adults

The Assembly passed a Bagley bill to remove 29 000 who aged to 18 and are now adults from AFDC. Governor Reagan supported quick passage saying it avoids depriving families of benefits. The measure could save about 30 million dollars but drew GOP criticism over hardships for some youths. A companion Senate bill seeks to prevent a 41 8 million cut to community colleges and special education programs.

Deputies and security officers from Mendocino State Hospital hunted the reservoir near the Talmage dams for Cecil Taylor reported missing after disappearing while swimming Wednesday afternoon. Divers faced murky water and failed to locate him as witnesses said he went under and did not resurface.

Mendocino State Hospital held Tony Waxon on San Quentin death row after a judge granted a temporary restraining order. Legal Services lawyers argued that post death-penalty changes and insanity rulings require a court hearing before any transfer to a correctional facility.
