Children Killed In Sleep In Haverhill Jet Crash
A pilotless F86 crashed into Lackney Street in Haverhill late at night, setting homes and cars ablaze. Two children, Pamela Gifford 11 and Todd 8, were killed in bed with their dog. Pilot Capt Calbert F. Sullivan parachuted to safety after engine failure and floated to safety on the Merrimack River. Fire crews battled flames for over an hour as neighbors aided, while residents and police described the scene in shock.

A parole violator from Washington, George William Ray, 26, was arrested at State and Standley by Ukiah detectives Tom Jondahl and others on suspicion of burglary. Ray, guest at the State Hotel, allegedly looted a hotel guest’s room and Rose Montgomery’s office, with a pile of merchandise left nearby. Ray had prior petty theft sentence and was an escapee from a Washington mental institution.

A Mississippi search for three missing civil rights workers was intensified from 200 to 400 sailors. Creeks ponds and lakes were dragged and brush probed as authorities pursued the missing men since June 21. Sheriff Lawrence Rainey said the case remained dark.

A 47 year old truck driver John Hyland of Sleaford attempted to free his vehicle by tying a winch to a railway line. The plan failed with the truck stuck while the rails were shifted six inches. Police reported the incident and a magistrate ordered Hyland to stand trial on obstructing a train charges.

A catamaran oil drilling rig with 43 men aboard exploded in the Gulf of Mexico 78 miles west of Morgan City Louisiana killing four and leaving 14 feared dead with 25 survivors. The C T Baker sank after the pre-dawn blast in 186 feet of water.
