James 0 Clifford reports Larry Lewis, a St. Francis Hotel waiter, began his 104th year with a 6.7 mile run through Golden Gate Park and a final mile to the hotel for a birthday party. He cites lifelong training, no smoking or alcohol, a diet of fruit and fat‑free foods, and three gallons of mountain valley water daily as factors in his longevity. Lewis, a former circus performer and Houdini assistant, remains active up to 13 hours daily with boxing and handball, under medical supervision. His wife Bessie, 73, attended the celebration.
On June 24 1971 the Mendocino Art Center schedules the opening of Our Town directed by Wes Bradshaw. The Life Class continues through summer with no membership activities this season. Cecelia Anderson leaves the art center office and Janice Alsheimer replaces her. The Summer Session begins soon with varied classes and a mailed bulletin for inquiries. Housing is urgently needed near Mendocino for single people or families. The annual Summer Fair is planned for August with a call for art wares pickup or drop off at the center.
