BLM's Pope Takes New Post in Portland as Equal Employment Specialist

Jordan C. Pope a wildlife specialist and information education coordinator for the Ukiah district will transfer to Portland Oregon to serve as equal employment specialist in the Portland Service Center. He arrives after two years in Ukiah following a Castle Valley Job Corps Center post in Utah. Pope a former athlete at Florida A&M and former teacher and football coach at Dillard High School will move with his wife Helen and two children Candis and Kenneth in July. A separate report notes a wheel and tire theft from a Volkswagen sedan at Manor Inn on N State Street.

Mendocino County to see Pacific Telephone rate increase

The Public Utilities Commission approved PT and Pacific Telephone to boost intra state revenues by 142 million dollars, raising home line charges across Mendocino County. Residential and business rates will rise, with monthly increases from one to several dollars depending on service level. The PUC also set a 7.85 percent return ceiling and allowed refunds if future rates are revised.

Soviet trio extends spaceflight record on Salyut

Three Soviet cosmonauts Dobrovolsky Volkov and Patsayev hold the world’s longest spaceflight record at 17 days plus. Their mission on the 25 ton Salyut station began June 6 after Soyuz 11 launch to join the station in orbit since April 19. Their aim is to study effects of weightlessness on the human body and compare with Soyuz 9 veterans Nikolayev and Sevastianov.
