Senate votes allow big firms to keep patents from government research
A U S Senate vote backed allowing major corporations to retain patents on research funded by government money. Lobbyists from electronics, aerospace, chemical, drug industries and the patent bar pressed the measure as defense and space interests sought control of profits. Critics called the move a public loss, noting the large 5 billion part of a 15 billion annual defense research pot aimed at contractors and universities.
