Ford Lobbying Memo Links Pastore to Auto Safety Debate
A confidential Ford memo dated June 4, 1971, reveals lobbying efforts to soften auto safety rules and cites discussions with Senator John Pastore of Rhode Island. Ford officials, including Bob Tasca, met Pastore while denying misquotation, and the memo notes plans to brief Pastore quarterly. The piece also reports on Pentagon secret papers showing gaps between Nixon administration rhetoric and contingency war plans in Vietnam and nearby regions.
