St Mary Parish Barbecue Plans Big Ukiah Park Event

The annual St Marys parish benefit barbecue at Ukiah Municipal Park begins serving at 12 30 Sunday. John Schafer chairs the event with three serving lines and five booths run by the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Ladies League. Tickets cost 1 50 for adults and 75 cents for grammar school children. Attendees should bring their own silverware.

Gen O Daniel to Probe Red Capture Of Five Americans

In HANOI Indochina five American Air Force technicians Servicing French planes were captured by Communist forces. Maj Gen John W O Daniel flew from Saigon to Tourane Air Base to investigate the seizure and determine how the Reds captured the men. Local Saigon authorities reported the capture at a small deserted beach.

Coast Guard abandons search for missing teen at sea

Aerial searches for 16 year old Martin Burns of Sebastopol were halted after he was swept from a homemade raft yesterday off Bodega Bay. Heavy seas hampered crews as the Coast Guard and Navy also ended the overboard search near Monterey for a missing Yorktown airman.

Weather Outlook For Northern California Coast

The forecast calls for fair weather across Northwestern California today tonight and Saturday with coastal fog patches and high cloudiness north of Ukiah. Temperatures remain near seasonal norms with winds 12 to 25 mph along the coast. Fort Bragg area enjoys fair conditions with fog Saturday and similar temperatures, while a five day outlook shows possible showers near the Oregon border Sunday but otherwise dry and near normal temperatures before a slight drop Sunday.

Philip H. Joseph Passes Rites Sunday at 2 P M

Funeral services for Philip H. Joseph will be held Sunday at 2 PM from Eversole Mortuary with Rev. Arthur H. Wallace of Ukiah Methodist Church officiating. Cremation follows at Chapel of the Chimes in Santa Rosa. Joseph died Thursday evening in Ukiah after a two week illness. he had been a longtime Ukiah resident and local jeweler and optometrist born in Geneva Switzerland on July 3 1878.

Driver Escapes After Lumber Truck Plunges Off Bank

Dwight Grass of 7 Oak Knoll Ukiah escaped serious harm when his lumber truck ran off the Redwood Highway three miles north of Willits after a binder chain failed. He suffered a sprained thumb and bruises to chest and right leg and was treated at Howard Memorial Hospital, released about ninety minutes later.

San Francisco reports rising tensions as unions prepare for a general strike at midnight Sunday potentially involving 150000 workers across California Oregon Washington Idaho Montana and Nevada. Check Passer Receives 90 Day Sentence in Smear of Checks

Daniel Craven, 39, of Medford Oregon, was sentenced by Judge Hale McCowen to 90 days in county jail for three counts of issuing fictitious checks totaling 75 dollars. He will be on three years probation after jail, and pay a 250 dollar fine. Dennis Billy, 30, pleaded not guilty to attempted rape and sex perversion involving a 31 year old Monte Rio woman in May, demanded a jury trial. Trial date set for July 2022 with jury drawing on July 9.

Two Day California Woolgrowers Conference Opens In Ukiah

More than 300 directors and members of the California Woolgrowers Association convene at Ukiah for a two day meeting. Sessions at the Palace Hotel start today with a ram sale wool show planned for tomorrow at the Twelfth District Fairgrounds. Ralph Taylor will give the luncheon address, introduced by E. Safford. Activities include talks by Dr. Shultz and demonstrations by UC Hopland station staff and state officials. A wool auction and ram sale are set for 4 p.m. today.
