Dr William M O'Brien named assistant superintendent medical services at Mendocino State Hospital in an announcement by Dr Daniel Lieberman. O'Brien currently serves as Psychiatrist III at Patton State Hospital near San Bernardino and was top on the state civil service list for the post. He brings extensive medical psychiatric and administrative expertise to Mendocino.
Ukiah city business manager Charles A. Keene warns contractors and individuals that all building, plumbing, electrical and related work requires city permits and inspections. Violations can incur fines up to 500 dollars in cash. The city council reiterates strict adherence to codes and ordinances for all such work.
United Nations dispatch reports Russia vetoed referring the Guatemala revolt to the Organization of American States. The move moved the issue toward the Western hemisphere, with U.S. Ambassador Lodge demanding Russia stay out of the hemisphere. Guatemala noted action would have to come via the OAS, formed at Caracas. Continued on Page 8.
In Honduras, Guatemalan labor leaders urged truckers, railway workers, and farmers to defend Guatemala City against anti Communist rebels approaching the capital. The government downplayed initial invasion effects while confirming the city was bombed and strafed several times since Friday. Rebel leaders predicted rapid victory and said Col. Carlos Castillo Armas would head a provisional government before nightfall.
Los Angeles two California aviators Crutcher and his son-in-law McLean were believed to have landed safely on a Guatemalan lake after their flying boat was forced down en route from Mexico to Bogota. Crutcher's wife sent a cablegram confirming the safe landing.

He outlined 11 steps toward a simple, clear fundamental policy, noting current water scarcity, inequitable distribution, and conflicts over water rights between users and government agencies.
John Drivell confirms the Ukiah bowl property gutted by fire has been sold to the State Market, which will use the new space for store room parking or both after remodeling. Charles Clifton of Weott in Humboldt County received a ticket from Patrolman Roy Burton after his Peterbilt cab and double trailer spilled a load of lumber 71 miles south of Willits. Clifton failed to negotiate a sharp right curve and lost both loads. This driver was involved in a previous week’s crash that critically injured Willits High School senior Charles Stubberfield, per C. H. P. reports.
City Planning Commission to study rezoning South Dora street from R-1 to R-2 between Clay street and the south city limits. Residents in the proposed zone change invited to attend the 8 pm session in the city council chambers amid prior hospital development debates and local facilities along Dora street.
Leon Thomas and Robert Desmann of the National Forest Service visited Ukiah on Friday. Thomas announced he would depart as supervisor, being transferred to Sierra National Forest with headquarters in Fresno. Desmann will succeed him as Mendocino National Forest supervisor.
A special county supervisors meeting will interview prospective candidates for medical superintendent of the county hospital tomorrow at 10 o'clock. Temporary head Dr. William West has filled the post since Dr. Neeley Bradford resigned in January.
A Brazilian air force rescue plane sighted a 40 foot power boat carrying Robert P. Terrill U S Embassy economic counselor and three others reported missing since last Thursday. The crew appeared safe and well. Coast Guard planes and surface craft resumed search for a fishing boat missing off Bodega Bay with three men and a woman aboard. The vessel identified as 28 N 035 was captained by Ted Rankin from Sonoma County. John Landy of Australia broke Roger Bannister's mile world record with 3 58. Landy shaved 1 4 seconds off Bannister's mark set at Oxford May 6. Bannister first to break four minutes. Vic Seixas and Tony Trabert opened Wimbledon with easy wins over local opponents. Seixas defeated Geoffrey Cass 6 1 6 0 6 1 and Trabert beat Peter Wooler 6 0 6 2 6 2.
