China Philippines establish diplomatic ties against Taiwan
Premier Chou En-Lai and President Marcos announced formal relations at ambassadorial level and a trade pact while Manila severed ties with the Nationalist Chinese government in Taiwan. Mendocino man dies in coast accident
A Mendocino man, Robert Vanderwalker, 28, died Friday when his flatbed truck overturned and pinned him on Ukiah Camptche Road. CHP reports say he was southbound at 5:15 p.m. eight percent miles east of Highway 1. Six others were injured in four weekend accidents, including a Fairfield man and a Piedmont girl with minor to moderate injuries. A county board meeting will discuss a 160 acre redwood grove acquisition and transfer of Mendocino Woodla campground to state parks.

Anderson receives 10 to life in Ukiah robbery case
Kevin Anderson and John Fanucchi, both Sonoma residents, were convicted of conspiracy to rob, first degree robbery, first degree burglary, and attempted murder in a Ukiah service station attack. Anderson drew 10 years to life, Fanucchi 5 to life, with the judge citing armed robbery as the major crime. The district attorney plans an appeal to the California Court of Appeal in San Francisco. The victim, John Leeper, 23, was shot six times and testified from his hospital bed.
