Ukiah chamber outlines downtown redesign ideas focusing on street and parking upgrades. proposals include relocating government offices to a central complex, potentially replacing the courthouse with a town square and bandstand, plus seven new or expanded parking locations and two story garages priced higher per square foot than lots.
Ukiah Unified board meets at 7 30 pm to discuss Potter Valley separation from the district. Superintendent Murphy to report on early findings as trustees consider de-unification steps and related budget items for 1975 76.
Trustees will convene at 4 30 p m in Room 501 Ukiah Fairgrounds on the interim campus with major reports and requests for certified administrative and classified salaries on the agenda. A revised preliminary budget by Walt Robie is planned and an update on the permanent campus site by Pete DeVries or committee members is expected. The board may hold an executive session on personnel matters before or after the public meeting.
Defense Secretary James R. Schlesinger told Senate hearings that the Soviet Union has for the first time placed missiles at the Berbera port in Somalia near the Red Sea. He cited aerial photos showing surface to surface and air to surface missiles at a repair and storage base and said the Russians are building a combat base there. The administration seeks 13.8 million for Diego Garcia naval base construction, deemed essential to national security.
Pomolita Ukiah Junior High School Band will hold its annual awards dinner Thursday at 7 p.m. at Pomolita School. Proceeds from the $2.50 adult and $1.50 child plates fund a Disneyland invitational trip in June. Diana Thompson is drum major, Ed Singer musical director, with over 100 band members honored that evening. Contact Ed Singer, Principal Roger Wren, or Pomolita band parents for attendance or donations.
The U S Supreme Court allowed immediate payment of back salaries totaling up to 83 million dollars for over 102 000 current and former state employees plus interest. Checks averaging about 500 dollars each will be mailed next week, with retirement benefits to follow.

Ukiah Unified teachers vote against a general one day strike today in a meeting at the Ukiahi gym. Spokesman Dave Bliss says the strike will occur on Sept 4 at 8 am to protest pay disparities after a 4 percent district increase and to push for broader state salary parity.
Nine adjoining property owners filed a petition with the Lake County board of supervisors protesting the cutting up and dumping of fish into Scotts Creek when Tule Lake basin is pumped for farming. Protest notes odor and lack of pump screens. Discussions include Water Quality Control, permission issues, and a pending June 30 hearing. Also a UPI item reports the House declined to override a presidential veto on coal mining tightening.
A 24-year-old Willits man, via attorney George Nelson, refuses Friday grand jury testimony to avoid self incrimination. Phillip Wood, testifying with Deputy Coroner Barron Hawkes, revealed details of the Jan 8 1973 kidnapping rape and murder of Barbara Stroud, 18, of Willits. Woods claimed immunity or fifth amendment concerns. District Attorney Duncan James seeks immunity order from Superior Judge Tim O'Brien. Also in custody in the slaying are Harold Harrington, Dennis Weeks, and Randy Rowan, all of Willits. The victim was sexually molested and strangled. body found near Shaw Road two days after the killing.
Senator Frank Church says his select committee will extend the Rockefeller Commission inquiry and disclose all facts to the public. Ford will release a 299 page report with a secret CIA assassination probe document. Justice Department studies possible prosecutions. Church criticizes Ford and the commission for not completing the investigation and vows full disclosure.
