Peers win rezoning for Ukiah computer plant south of 101

The county planning commission approved a 41 acre rezoning west of Highway 101 near Ukiah to permit John Peers Co. computer assembly plant. The 6-1 vote designates the freeway frontage as light manufacturing and the back 21 acres as suburban agriculture. Peers plans to operate by fall and hire locals.

Planners set hearing on rezoning for Oak Street area

Ukiah planning commission set a July 3 public hearing to rezone S Oak Street from Clay to Gobbi in the 700 block from R-2 to R-3 to allow multiple family dwellings. Traffic committee found area can handle new units amid three existing in the block. The panel also supported a use permit for Calvary Baptist Church adding a 1904 sq ft classroom at 465 Luce Avenue with landscaping and drainage conditions. A county referral urged denial of two billboard signs at Rancho Siesta Motel 1821 S State Street. Al Norris reelected chair. Bob Cannon to a second term as vice chair.

Willits men charged in Willits fraud scheme

District Attorney Duncan James filed felony complaints for grand theft by fraud and false pretenses against Willits area suspects Radke and Barker. Warrants set at 25 000 bail each as they face arrest on grand theft fraud charges related to a vending machine distributorship scam.

Ukiah Extends Sidewalk Project On Owner-Pay Basis

City manager says sidewalk material funds will run out by July 1 while federally funded labor remains through Aug 15. Project to continue with property owners paying for materials at 40 cents per square foot for sidewalk and 1.25 dollars per linear foot for curb and gutter. Second priority area lies west of State Street in older residential district.

British Vote for E C M Maintains Membership

Early official returns from the referendum show Britain voting nearly three to one to stay in the European Common Market. Opponents conceded defeat as counting continued on about 26 million votes in the first referendum in British history.

Indicted dolwig tied to real estate finance racket

Seven defendants including former State Senator Richard Dolwig face a 28 count federal indictment over an advance fee loan scheme. The case centers on Eurovest Ltd from Grand Cayman with letters of credit from Chase Manhattan and First National City Bank, alleging $50 million in securities and advance fees that were not returned. Victims across the United States range from Oakland and Vancouver to Anchorage and Beverly Hills, with charges including conspiracy mail fraud and racketeering.

Ukiah City Council Approves Six Traffic Projects

Ukiah city council approved a prioritized list of six traffic projects to be funded by Federal Aid Urban road funds, with about 150000 split in roughly 50000 increments. The list goes to the county board for acceptance and a July 2 hearing will cover weed abatement.

The Ukiah Elks announce a Flag Day ceremony at 2 p.m. June 14 in city park with the Ukiah high school band and a Marine Corps color guard from Mare Island Vallejo. Bob Burke Jr. chairs the event. Jaycees will place flags along State School and Perkins Streets as part of a flag project.

U.S. jobless rate hits 9.2 percent in May

Unemployment rose to 9.2 percent the highest since 1941, with 8.5 million out of work nationally. Mendocino County saw May figures delayed by new methods but April unemployment at 17.6 percent, down from February’s 20.8 percent.
