San Gabriel Mission: history and a long, storied rise

San Gabriel Mission, founded Sept 8 1771 by Fathers Cambon and Somera, rises as a center of ranching and agriculture amid Indian conflicts and earthquakes. The story traces its move to a new site in 1775, the growth under Cruzado Sanchez Palou Lasuen, and its eventual transfer to secular control and restoration by Padres before returning to the Franciscans in 1843 and later care by Claretian Fathers.
