Community leaders praise Ukiah's Congress for progress while urging sustained follow through. Members seek volunteers to advance projects from a civic center to public transportation, youth needs, and education, praising a study of a positive action program for a new civic center.
The piece notes that during a European dollar crisis American travelers using international credit cards faced no local currency hurdles. American Express, Diners Club, and Carte Blanche cards are paid by merchants in their own currencies, shielding proprietors from dollar fluctuations. Norgard, active in lodge and church work, will spend a short time at White Dog Springs before summer school.
A 60 day study in three southern California counties found 175 objects thrown onto freeways with 100 at pedestrian overcrossings. The bill signs into law requires screening of all state freeway overcrossings where pedestrians are allowed with $15 million cost for 1,542 structures. The widow of a truck driver killed by a 30 pound rock praised the measure and gathered 3000 signatures urging action.
