Ukiah to field women’s softball league in 1971

The Ukiah Valley Women's Softball League plans Friday night games at Giorno Park starting June 4 with two 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. contests and Monday 7 p.m. matchups. Seven to eight teams, including Potter Valley and possibly Fort Bragg, are expected in the season. Ukiah players showed speed in a Santa Rosa Slow Pitch tourney, with Texaco Swingers leading the effort and support from Liz Jurado and Donna Arnold. Sponsors include Savings Bank of Mendocino, Texaco, Handy Market, and local businesses.

Ukiah Varsity baseball crowned NBL I co champs

Ukiah's Varsity baseball team, coached by Al Snarski with help from Bill Brunemeyer and Pat Wilson, earned a co championship with Napa after a tough season marked by 12 inning games and tight playoff battles. The squad finished 9-4 in the league, 15-7 overall, and talent returning next season includes seven players, with seniors honored at the Block U-Ukiah Boosters dinner.

Young American Closes Rally To Win British Amateur Match

Jim Simons of Butler Pennsylvania, 21 and youngest Walker Cup member, overturned a three hole deficit in the final stages to beat Ian Hutcheon of Scotland on the 20th green in the British Amateur Championship second round. Simons, from Winston Salem and Wake Forest, joked about planning a plane home before striking back with three late bogies by Hutcheon.
