PG&E schedules four Mendocino County nuclear plant talks
Pacific Gas and Electric will hold four town meetings in Mendocino County to discuss the proposed Point Arena nuclear plant. Experts from PG&E and Stanford University will answer questions on geology siting land use and safety at Willits Boonville Gualala and Mendocino from Feb 1 to Feb 9 at 8 p.m. Residents may also mail questions to Nuclear Information Ukiah.

Dean Nelson, Ukiah Safeway manager, took the oath as 1972 president at the Chamber of Commerce installation dinner at the Fairgrounds. He pledged to continue strong 1971 programs and to push a Ukiah wine festival, replacing outgoing president Marshall Love. The event honored former Superior Court Judge Lilburn Gibson with the outstanding citizen award and featured Mayor Sterling Norgard administering oaths to new officers and directors.

Frease murder trial opens in Covelo case
District Attorney Duncan James opened the murder trial of Robert Clarence Frease a 43 year old Covelo man accused of beating his common law wife Patricia Myers 32 to death on May 10 1971. Frease was arrested May 11 but released the next day for lack of sufficient evidence to charge and arraign within 48 hours. Deputies responded to a May 10 domestic disturbance. Myers died at Willits hospital from internal injuries prompting the investigation. James seeks a first degree murder conviction.

Pot initiative on Nov ballot may land in California
San Francisco reports that California voters may decide in November whether marijuana use cultivation and ownership should be legalized.
