Banker 72 chairman Supervisor named for board of supervisors

Ernie Banker was unanimously elected 1972 chairman of the board of supervisors, in his eighth year as Second district supervisor, to succeed Harvey Sawyers who nominated him. Al Sarbero became vice chairman. The ceremony featured a rotating chair and a cigars joke as Avila moved an ashtray away from Sawyers.

County Administrator Proposes Legislation Pack for Board Review

County Administrator Al Beltrami submitted seven items for state lawmakers including open burning variances, coastal zone definitions, and rural lost-person aid. Proposals cover airport construction by Community Services Districts, ordinance adoption by reference, court reporter reimbursements, and clerk of the board appointment for counties with 50,000 to 55,000 residents.

Hit and run suspect surrenders in Ukiah crosswalk crash

A nine year old Ukiah boy escaped serious injury when a motorcycle struck him and two brothers while crossing S State Street Observatory Street intersection. Edward Esquivel, treated for a broken leg, and brothers Rudy and Colin were in the crosswalk as a rider, later identified as Robert Graves, turned himself in. Graves faces felony hit and run charges as police seek witnesses to resolve diverging testimonies.

Nixon plans new space aid as Sato arrives for talks

President Nixon awaits Japan Prime Minister Eisaku Sato at the Western White House for a two day summit. County Grand Jury Criticized by Sawyers Overreach

Sawyers turned over chair to Banker and accused the Mendocino County Grand Jury of overstepping boundaries by involving itself in civil matters and in projects like Point Arena nuclear plant and My Ranch subdivision. The board denied a $2,000 budget increase, voting 3 to 2, with Barbero Banker Avila in favor and Galletti Stoen opposing. Public hearing set on burning rules

A public hearing to consider changing the county ordinance banning burning within two miles of city limits will be held Jan 18 after a Tuesday board of supervisors vote.
