Attorney general given jail term for lying

Louisiana Attorney General Jack P. Gremillion was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of lying to a federal grand jury about financial interests in a loan firm. Potter Valley Quake Felt At 10 20 P M

A sharp earthquake rattled Potter Valley area at 10 20 PM with doors and windows shaking. No reports of the quake in Redwood Valley or Ukiah. Mrs. Ken Stroh said dogs barked after a discernible shock and a later silence. A Potter Valley caller also reported feeling it.

Abandon Westport road: subdivision seeks locked gate

Westport Beach subdivision homeowners asked the county board of supervisors to abandon the road county road 445 so they could install a locked gate to deter burglaries. Only two homes exist. county oversight expected unless gate blocks access. Supervisor Avila opposed, Fenigan said gate aids safety with agency access.

Firefighters respond to controlled burn in Regina Heights

Two Ukiah pumpers and a salvage unit rushed to River Road near the State Hospital at 7 01 a m after sighting embers from a planned burn. They found a shed of tar paper roof burning despite a permit issued yesterday. Donald F Wegner of Santa Rosa had applied for the permit to burn between 7 am and noon and promised the shed would be knocked down before ignition but did not. No punitive action was planned.

Reagan Urges Closing San Quentin and Building New Prisons

California Governor Ronald Reagan announced plans to phase out San Quentin Prison by 1974, transferring inmates to new maximum security facilities and reducing San Quentin’s population from 2,237 to about 1,500 next year. He outlined efforts to fund education, health insurance exploration, no fault auto insurance, and welfare reform while avoiding new taxes.

Fire incidents report from Willits and Talmage areas

On Wednesday at Yokayo Shipping Center in Willits a car fire destroyed the auto of Shirley Newby and fire crews arrived. A second at Moose Lodge on State Street caused minor smoke damage with cause tied to a cardboard container near a hot water heater. Today at 7:01 a.m. a structure fire was reported at the control barn of Wegner Ranch on Eastside Road in Talmage.

Weather quirks hit Ukiah with unusual warmth dip

Ukiah residents logged a rare weather split with a 57 degree high and 25 degree low on Wednesday, two degrees above Tuesday. Temperatures mirrored trends from a year ago, as 27 degrees marked the morning low and 57/25 recurred, prompting notes from local weather watchers about possible parallels in 1972.
