Leo C. Martin dies at 67 with Thursday rites

Leo C. Martin, 67, Detroit native and retired automotive body work specialist, died Sunday in Clearlake Highlands. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 30 p.m. from Abby of the Chimes in Napa, with burial at Sky Lawn Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Mary, three sons Roy Napa Carlos Vallejo and Lloyd Fort Bragg, brother Erwin Ukiah, another brother Vernon Ukiah and sister Neva Chand of St Petersburg Beach Florida.

Ukiah Man Praised by Senator Stevenson for Bartolomie Aid

Ukiah resident C. E. Keeler received a reply from Sen Adlai Stevenson III praising his letter congratulating Stevenson on his November victory. Keeler, a longtime supporter of Adlai Stevenson II, described a fundraising drive he and his donkey "Adlai Stevenson" led for Susan Bartolomie, the abducted and shot Ukiah girl. The senator commended Keeler for his efforts on her behalf.

Mystery skid marks hint at car plunge off Highway 1

FT BRAGG Mendocino County sheriff reports skid marks one and a half miles south of Elk suggesting a vehicle left the road and went over an embankment into the ocean. Chrome strips found at cliff base support an accident theory though no further wreckage has been located.

Damaged facilities at Vinewood Park blamed on kids

City Engineer Al Kruth reported vandalism at Vinewood Park including damaged plumbing fixtures drains and vents in the new lavatory structure. Sgt Jerry Ransom surveyed the scene after the 4:54 PM report. Sheriff’s deputies investigate and Coast Guard help may be sought for nearby wreckage while a woman's body found north of Manchester remains unidentified.

Jury acquits Hengeveld in Ukiah Justice Court

Karl Hengeveld aged 23 of Ukiah was acquitted of obstructing an officer and speeding after a jury trial last week. Represented by Bob Fowler of the public defender’s office, with Deputy District Attorney Bill Neill prosecuting and Judge Hale McCowen Jr. presiding.

Ukiah Annexation Sought for Three Acre Parcel

LAFCO approves a request by the City of Ukiah to annex a three acre parcel east of the city, south of Gobbi Street. The land, appraised at 2000 dollars, is now orchard land but a residential development is planned. Landowners support the annexation. board of supervisors must approve, with no public hearings or election required.

Fort Bragg's first baby of the year arrived at Community Hospital at 3 31 p m yesterday. The daughter of Mr and Mrs William J Wesley weighed five pounds eight ounces at birth and has not yet been named.

Labor dispute settled by Wagner and union

A labor dispute between Teamsters Local 980 and John Wagner Construction ended after 8 am. Wagner and union representative Norvin E. Shannon reached agreement following two days of picketing. The union sought union drivers for Wagner’s trucks. The $275,000 annex to the Pacific Telephone building at S Oak and W Clay will expand dialing service.

Kiwanis Club learns of meeting place changes in Ukiah

Kiwanis members are advised of a temporary meeting change with three weeks of luncheon sessions at the Manor Inn. Travis Lawrence will lead the Wednesday session and ministers are invited as guests. A board meeting is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at Laurentide Finance. The crab feed is scheduled for January 23 at the municipal clubhouse. A chimney fire at the Driftwood Motel near Highway 1 north of Ft. Bragg was quickly contained with minor damage.

Grim traffic toll underscored by Fort Bragg crash death

The California Highway Patrol reported the first traffic accident death of the year in Fort Bragg, highlighting grim highway fatality totals for the area as the new decade begins.

Underground cables planned for Ukiah area project

Pacific Telephone plans 15,000 feet of underground cable in Ukiah along Oak Stevenson to State Street Low Gap Road at a cost of 152,000 with a 4,600 foot conduit. Aerial cable will extend to Crawford Lumber, tying into a central office addition under construction. Also noted are 1970 accident totals in Mendocino County and CHP regional figures.

Hopland School Burglarized Over Christmas Break

Hopland elementary officials reported to the sheriff that someone broke into the locked building during the holidays and pried open a small safe. The burglar took about 50 to 60 dollars in coins and bills. entry may have used a key or similar device. Deputy Ralph Maize filed the burglary report.
