Sawyers elected chairman of Mendocino board

J Harvey Sawyers was named chairman of the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors with Ernest Banker of Ukiah as vice chair. Retiring Supervisor Joe Scaramella of Point Arena gave a farewell address as Ted Galletti of Elk took over the Fifth district. The board adopted ordinance amendments and approved a tax correction for Joe Brundage, a logging operator in Covelo, yielding nearly $2,000 after equipment moved to Humboldt County.

Hopland Area Power Failure Disrupts 500 Homes

A 12,000 volt line failure near a damaged pole cut power to about 500 households in Old and New Hopland from 8 10 p.m. Tuesday. Pacific Gas and Electric reports crews from Ukiah responded and repaired the line after a car strike damaged the pole.

Clear water fishing plan at Coyote Dam gates closed until Sunday

The Corps of Engineers says gates at Coyote Dam will stay closed through Sunday evening if weather remains clear to provide optimal fishing water. Gates open at sunset Sunday unless rain threatens. Yo Yo schedule may resume if Ukiah area keeps nice weather. Nearby updates include a chimney fire at 273 E Clay and a hospital transport call.

Ukiah Court Pay Raise Sparks County Debate

Fort Bragg supervisors heard Judge Heeb press for keeping preliminary hearings in Ukiah Justice Court while noting DA discretion and county convenience. The board approved Judge Hale McCowen’s salary rise from 1155 to 1500 per month, effective Feb 1, by 4 to 1, with Avila voting no to urge broader distribution of hearings.
