Nixon to hold mini news conference with TV reporters

President Nixon scheduled a one hour mini news conference for tonight with four television correspondents as part of a drive to widen contact with the press. Helen Thomas reports from Washington for UPI and notes the event as part of a series of outreach efforts.

Sierck obituary and local burglary report

Funeral services are set for William Sierck of Eureka 85 after a December death. He was a Hopland native rancher, husband of the late Rose Sierck, and a member of Abell Masonic Lodge. Burglary reports include thefts in Ukiah and Hopland areas during the holiday weekend and a Texas-plate motel burglary.

Ukiah Firemen Report Light Holiday Period

Ukiah's fire crews faced a quiet weekend with only a few blazes. A fire gutted a house at 705 N Dora Street owned by Charles Norfolk, with cause undetermined and no damage estimate. At 8:45 this morning a JoAnn Wright owned car from Talmage caught fire at Talmage Road and S State, causing minor wiring damage.

Police probe burglaries near Ukiah Theater

Two burglaries were reported to Ukiah police over the holiday weekend near the Ukiah Theater. John Bartolomie said his station wagon in the 600 block of S Oak was broken into Saturday evening while he and his family attended the theater, a stereo tape deck worth 95 dollars being stolen. Allan Hibbs reported an attempted entry to his car in the PG E parking lot after midnight Sunday, with nothing stolen.

Funeral services for Mrs Hattie Baumgardner in Ukiah

Funeral services were held today at Eversole Mortuary for Mrs Hattie Baumgardner 79 a Ukiah resident for 36 years who died New Year Eve at a local convalescent hospital The Texas native widow of Louis Baumgardner and sister in law of John Baumgardner of Cloverdale survive including sister Bunnie Carter in Texas Burial followed at Oak Mound Cemetery Healdsburg conducted by Rev Richard Taylor.

Tipsy driving lands Ukiah man in jail

William Clare McCain a 45 year old Ukiah man was arrested Friday afternoon by the Highway Patrol on a drunk driving charge at the intersection of S State and Oak Knoll and is held in county jail pending arraignment Terry Gale Van Tassel 22 also of Ukiah was arrested early Sunday by sheriff's deputies for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of an open container in his car and is held pending arraignment in county jail

San Francisco 49ers fans suffer TV blackout in Santa Rosa

In Santa Rosa thousands of 49er fans faced a double defeat as a cable broadcast of the NFC title game failed in final quarter. About 1,800 ate lunch at Flamingo Hotel and 450 watched at Los Robles Motel while Total Television could not explain the outage. The 49ers lost 17-10 to Dallas, Northwestern California weather for Tuesday shows fog in valleys and mild highs.

Nudists urged to share memories for naturism history

ORPINGTON England UPI reports the North Kent Sun Club one of Britain's largest appeals to nudists of the 1940s to share memories for a forthcoming History of Naturism to be published later this year.

Holiday traffic toll reaches 440 in New Year weekend

United Press International reports 440 traffic fatalities from 6 p.m. Thursday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, with total deaths 526 across all causes. National Safety Council had expected 400 to 500, cautioning final toll may exceed the estimate due to late reports. Texas 53, California 40, New York 25, Illinois 21, Michigan 20. In San Francisco, 20 arrested and 12 injured after fights among spectators at the Forty Niner Cowboys game, beers and bottles flying.

Speed blamed in two Redwood Valley rollover injuries

Local Highway Patrol investigated two Friday morning rollovers on the first day of 1971. Joseph Coughlin, 36, Redwood Valley, lost control on a sharp curve near Highway 101 while traveling what officers described as moderate speed, his pickup landing atop a Kimpton fence with major damage and minor injuries. Minutes later Sylvia Housley, 21, Boonville, skidded on a wet patch near Soda Creek Bridge on Boonville Road and overturned. she was taken to Mendocino Community Hospital with minor injuries.
