In Hyden Kentucky UPI reports the Finley Coal Co mine explosion last Wednesday killed 38 workers. A planned December 22 safety inspection by the U S Bureau of Mines was postponed due to holiday schedules. Investigators planned to assess five cited safety violations and probe possible electrical causes alongside state inspectors.
The 91st Congress nears formal adjournment as SST fights persist. The Senate accepted a House plan to fund the Transportation Department and the SST until March 30, averting a broader budget shutdown. House and Senate move to finalize adjournment with Nixon terms in limbo.
President Nixon signed the Muskie bill guiding auto makers to near emission-free cars by 1976. Chief sponsor Sen Edmund Muskie did not attend the ceremony, along with House sponsor Rep Paul Rogers. White House aides cited procedural naming. EPA head William Ruckelshaus pledged vigorous enforcement.
A car driven by Robert K. Vrazel 44 of Laws Avenue Ukiah backed out of a parking spot at The Lido and, after fogged rear window, rolled forward hitting a car and then breaking through the fence into the Ukiah Sanitary Disposal Service office. The USDS ceased operations and Ukiah Solid Wastes takes over with a five year City of Ukiah contract starting tomorrow. Vrazel uninjured. Firefighters stood by. Weather and date details follow.
