Second Sharp Temblor Hits Eureka City

A sharp earthquake rocked Eureka and nearby Arcata at 1 18 am felt across the region. Police reported the quake swamped with calls as windows cracked wider and minor damage spread to chimneys and dishes. The Dec 21 quake had already caused heavy damage and a death.

Brownell Adds 27 New Groups To Red-Dominated Subversives

Atty Gen Herbert Brownell Jr gave 27 groups ten days to request hearings on their alleged communist domination, expanding the federal list of subversive organizations to 254, including the Communist Party and Ku Klux Klan. A National Lawyers Guild addition is pending court action. Read among the notices are the San Francisco East Bay Peace Committee, Elsinore Progressive League in California, Everybody's Committee to Outlaw War in Los Angeles, Idaho Pension Union in Coeur d Alene, and League For Common Sense in Salt Lake City.

Railroad Heads on Routine Business Visit

G L Morrison vice president and general manager of North Western Pacific Railroad and Charles E Neal division engineer were in Ukiah today for routine business. They departed at noon for the company's headquarters in San Rafael.

Freighter Oceanic Towed to Hakodate in Japan

A 10000-ton American freighter Oceanic, owner of Liberty-type design, was escorted by Japanese Coast Guard vessel Daito after developing a severe portside crack near the Kurile Islands. The ship, radioing for escort, was 270 miles ENE of Nemuro and headed toward Hakodate with a plan to arrive the next day.

Four day Cajon Pass fire near San Bernardino contained

A forest and brush fire burning over 3500 acres in the Cajon Pass area north of San Bernardino was controlled on three sides and expected to be under control by night. No homes were threatened as backfires were used on Sugar Pine Mountain. Wind easing forecast aided containment.

Private Services Friday For Charles Myszka

Funeral services for Charles S. Myszka will be held Friday at 1 30 p m from Zimmerman Mortuary with Rev Robert G Groves officiating. Instrumental music will follow at the Chapel of the Chimes in Santa Rosa. Mr Myszka, born April 28 1888 in Garnett Kansas, died December 30 1954 at his Ukiah home. He is survived by wife Annette and daughters Charlene Ann and Wanda all of Ukiah. A sister, Mrs Mary Carson, resides in Costa Mesa California. He served Mendocino county as farm advisor from 1918 to 1945 and owned the Tadlock Myszka ranch three miles south of Ukiah. The family home was established in Ukiah in 1932.

Marr to Become Lake County Sheriff Next Week

Sheriff elect Raleigh L. Marr Jr. will assume the Lake County sheriff's office Monday, replacing Chet Antrim who did not seek another term. Marr has served seven years as undersheriff and two years as deputy, with other county officials re-elected to new terms.

Correction issued on Covelo fire ownership error

A Wednesday report erred describing the burned Covelo home as Cleo O Ferrall’s. The house belonged to LéO Ferrall’s cousin, occupied by Robert Henderson’s family. Proceeds from the American Legion New Year dance will aid the displaced family.

Sailor Returns Home After Two Years at Sea

Charles E. Layne arrives in the United States after two years overseas with the U S Navy and stays with Mr and Mrs Harry Matthews at 1901 Elm Street, the parents of his wife who remained in Ukiah. He has two years left in service and will report to duty in San Diego on January 27. Mrs Lane is the former Arlene Layne.
