The Daily Journal reports Watch Night observances will be held only at two churches in Ukiah. First Baptist opens 9 to 12 New Year Eve with a film The Stones Cry Out, secret feature, social fellowship 10 to 11, and devotion at midnight. First Christian Church starts at 8 with a family party and a midnight devotional.

Motel Guest Loses Wallet in Mitchell Stole Cash

Edward O Spoo of Mitchell Oregon, a motel guest on South State street, reported to police that his wallet was taken from trousers on a chair. He awoke to a slightly open door and found the wallet on the garage floor near his car with 200 missing. Norman Phillips reported a Sealon gasoline can stolen from his jeep on Clara avenue.

Foster couple to retire after 48 years in Ukiah mercantile trade

Mr and Mrs L H Foster Sr plan January 1 retirement from Foster’s Variety Store at 206 South State St Ukiah after 48 years in business. Lyndell Foster 76 and Katherine Foster 69 began in 1906 opening Ukiah’s first variety shop and later ran multiple ventures before settling in the Hildreth building. Their son Arlington remains active in operation, while civic involvement and club leadership mark the couple’s long public life.

Sherman Admits Theft of Poulos Truck

Thomas George Sherman of Ukiah pleaded guilty to stealing a truck owned by Supervisor Paul Poulos. Sentencing was continued to next Friday after a report and recommendation from the county probation officer. parts of the vehicle were later found in Lake County.

Sharon Harding Pleads Guilty On Check Count

Sharon June Harding aged 19 pleaded guilty in superior court to passing two fictitious checks in Ukiah. Judge Hale McCowen referred the case to a probation officer for report and recommendation. she was arraigned before Judge W S Van Dyke yesterday. Sentence set for next Friday morning. she is jailed awaiting sentencing. Arrest followed December 21 cashing a check. she described a partner Edward E Harding being sought by police.

Seven new county officers will take oath next Monday at 11 45 a m to replace officials whose total county service adds to 128 years.
