Census finds Americans live longer and spend time watching TV

The Census Bureau report Social Indicators 1976 notes rising life expectancy and income but growing family instability with one in ten white families led by a woman and over one third of black families headed by a woman. It also cites higher education yet widespread functional illiteracy and a tripling of violent and property crime over two decades.

Forecast of American families shrinking in coming decades

The report projects that by 1990 the typical married couple will have one child. Family size falls from a peak of 3.7 in the mid 1960s to about 3.4 now. Life expectancy rises with a girl born in 1974 expected to live to 76 and a boy to 68. Birthrates continue to decline.
