Charlie Chaplin Dies on Christmas Day at 88

Charlie Chaplin known as the Little Tramp died in his sleep on Christmas Day at age 88 in Vevey Switzerland. He was praised worldwide as the greatest comedian ever with wife Oona and seven of his eight children at his bedside per Dr Henri Perrier.

Arson suspected in Mid Mountain fires near Potter Valley

Investigators from Mendocino County Sheriff and California Department of Forestry probe four owner built homes burned in the remote Mid Mountain Subdivision eight miles east of Potter Valley as three fires started within minutes. Man arrested in Hillside Strangler case murder

Los Angeles police booked 24 year old Thomas Davis on suspicion of murder in the death of Caroline Williams 21 found in the Wilshire District. Pasadena police questioned Davis in connection with the strangulation of Paula Gwen Ward 18 whose body was found near the Rose Bowl. Both victims were partially clothed and not sexually molested.

Death toll rises in postholiday travel deaths

United Press International reports at least 278 people died in weekend traffic accidents as holiday travelers return home. Texas led with 24 deaths, Georgia 18, Missouri 7, California 7, Florida 14, Pennsylvania 13, Ohio and Illinois 12 each. Other causes included 43 fires and 4 plane deaths for a total of 358.

Drummond Named First Mendocino County Counsel

John Drummond 33 becomes Mendocino County counsel and takes office Tuesday in the courthouse third floor former women’s jail. He succeeds acting adviser Rick Henderson whose contract expires December 31 and who will enter private practice with Lee Adams. Henderson, a 1974 USF law grad, served as assistant district attorney since July 1976 and will now handle civil and other cases with his new partner. Lechowick is named as Drummond’s chief deputy and a second deputy will be appointed next year to split county schools and other business. Henderson says the four-year county counsel contract was too long and plans note editors would rewrite zoning ordinances.
