Escaped murderer leads fatal Newport tavern shooting

Jackie Layman, an escaped inmate from Brushy Mountain Prison, entered a Newport Tennessee tavern with accomplices and opened fire. Four men died including Layman, two were wounded, and six people were taken in for questioning with at least two facing murder or attempted murder charges. The victims include Ricky Cochran and Gary Miller and Steve Valentine. Layman was killed during the barrage by an unidentified shooter. The incident occurred after Layman’s August escape during a 99 year murder sentence. Local residents described a swift, deadly assault and a tense aftermath as families waited for news of the injured.

Christmas death toll swells to 150

Four children die when a car skids on snow and collides with another on Ohio 66 near Defiance. Richard Roddy and five nephews and nieces were en route from Defiance to Oakwood when the crash occurred. Eddie Roddy 16, Kim 13, David 10, Trisha 4 perished. Jeff 15 survived with critical injuries to a fifth Roddy child and Benny Fidler. Other fatalities rise nationwide to 150 in the holiday period.

Beiruts Civil War Violence Escalates Amid Christmas Day Attacks

Beirut endures renewed fighting as mortar and sniper fire claim at least 40 lives and wound about 100 in 48 hours. Nine months of civil war between right wing Christians and leftist Muslims has left more than 6,500 dead and 13,000 wounded. Despite new cease-fire efforts in Zahle and Tripoli, violence spreads with casualties including a housewife in a bread line and three police officers. Petaluma roofer loses two daughters in Christmas Day fire

A pre dawn blaze gutted the home of Robert Meader at 696 Petaluma Blvd North killing his daughters Jane age 3 and Penny 15. Ellen 13 was treated for burns on 40 percent of her body and released from Kaiser Hospital. A nearby fire at 8 33 am damaged the James Bertain residence due to combustibles near a furnace. Calpella County Water District to hold a Monday Dec 29 meeting at 7 pm to elect a chairman and add two directors amid reported water problems. Israel minister Shimon Peres called for talks with Palestinians but warned the PLO is doomed to destruction in a Maariv interview.
