Beirut clashes raise fear of wider Lebanon war

Beir ut report notes three days of rocket and mortar battles east of Beirut raise fears the fighting could spread to the capital and erupt again during the Christmas period. At least 29 people die on Tuesday in a third day of clashes across Lebanon, with the fiercest fighting around Zahle, 25 miles east of Beirut where rightists leftists and army troops clash near the Syrian border.

Prisoner work furlough program urged to ease jail crowd

Supervisors heard Max Forseter of Philo appeal for a day release work furlough plan for county jail inmates to work at their jobs and stay in jail at night. He cited Sonoma and Humboldt as successes and said Mendocino is an island without it. Captain Moe noted jail population blocks immediate action, though sheriff supports the idea and plans to move to the Rehabilitation Center in February. Tim O Brien backs the concept. The board also moved to transfer Brooktrails Resort Improvement District powers to the Brooktrails Community Services District, naming Ruth Wessel and others as directors, while also approving a measure to cut the Community Development Commission from 15 to 9 members amid housing concerns.

CIA chief in Greece slain in Athens attack

Richard Welch 46, head of CIA operations in Greece, was shot to death in a 30 second ambush outside the U S Embassy in Athens after leaving a Christmas party. Police called the killing a very professional job and linked it to threats from an organization calling itself Union of Officers Struggling for the National Ideal. An American official said Welch was chief of all CIA activities in Greece and had been named in recent publications as a possible target.

Mexican brothers found guilty in extortion kidnaping case

Filimon Galvez-Diaz and Nestor Galvez-Diaz, Mexican nationals aged 26 and 20, were convicted by a Superior Court jury of single counts of kidnaping for extortion. The victim Gregorio Rodriguez Huerta, 18, also a Mexican, was abducted Aug 18 from a ranch south of Hopland and taken to Monrovia. The Little Lindbergh law could yield life imprisonment.
