Oil ministers freed as terrorists surrender in Algiers

Pro Palestinian gunmen who seized OPEC leaders in Vienna surrendered after a 25 hour north African flight. The four Palestinians and one German released hostages in Algiers and Tripoli before investigators consider extradition and trial options. Renowned ministers Yamani and Amouzegar were among those freed.

Ford signs energy bill calling it only a beginning

President Ford praised a yearlong Congress energy bill as only a beginning and urged quick action on further provisions to reach energy independence. He highlighted four goals including deregulating natural gas and expanding production while noting price impacts may not lower costs for consumers immediately.

Ukiah City Council Candidates Field Crowded for March 2 Race

Ukiah’s council race tightens as three incumbents including Mayor Gary Weinkauf and three other politicians filed nomination papers. Former City Manager Lyell Cash and longtime councilman Jack Simpson also entered, joining seven other candidates for three seats. Incumbent Sterling Norgard will not seek reelection. Filing deadline is tomorrow.

Kissinger Warns U.S. Will Resist Soviet Expansion in Angola

Secretary of State Henry Kissinger warned the Soviet Union that the United States will resist military expansion in Angola and elsewhere as the Angola civil war continues. He attacked Congress over CIA covert aid and said continued Soviet and Cuban support to leftist MPLA risks strained relations and jeopardizes a planned Moscow visit.

Syria and Lebanon pledge crackdown on arms shipments

Syria agreed to curb illicit arms into Lebanon to halt a widening war east of Beirut. In the Bekaa Valley, Lebanese army troops and various factions fought almost nonstop around Zahle with rockets and mortars.

Death threats through the mail tied to Manson followers

Sandra Good and Susan Murphy, linked to the Charles Manson cult, were arrested in Sacramento on one count of conspiring to mail death threat letters. FBI said 171 letters were prepared but never mailed. Miss Fromme remained in custody in San Diego awaiting prison assignment for a life sentence.
