Christmas lighting display wins Journal prize in Ukiah

Five Ukiah judges awarded the Al Fraga residence at 424 Oak Park avenue first prize in the Journal’s outdoor lighting contest. John Holling home at Grove and Bush streets took second, and Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Lindbergh at 200 Calvert court took third. Prizes were $25, $15, and $10 respectively. The Fraga display featured a white star, an angel over the roof, two camels in blue-lit panels, and the phrase Peace on Earth.

Suit Filed Against Crofoot Lumber for Breach of Contract

The Henshaw Investment Company of San Francisco sues Crofoot Lumber Inc and Western Title Insurance in superior court seeking $25,000 liquidated damages from a failed Eden Valley ranch purchase. The contract fixed at 650000 for the 26,000 acre property. a $26,000 deposit was to be paid to Henshaw if the sale failed. The company claims the title is clouded and asks the court to clear it.

Yule Mail Tops All Previous Record at Ukiah

Ukiah post office dispatched 42500 Christmas letters on peak day, beating 1953 by about 5000 and signaling the busiest year on record. Overall Christmas mail volume rose about 15 percent with total receipts the largest ever, while staff, including 10 extra workers during the 10 day rush, maintained efficiency.

Mrs Lulu Holtz Dies. Ukiah Resident 77

Services are pending at Zimmerman Mortuary for Mrs Lulu Holtz who died this morning at Ukiah General Hospital at age 77. She was a longtime resident of the community and mother of Everett Cox of Ukiah.

County Supervisors Set Date To Discuss Coyote Valley Dam

Mendocino board will discuss the dam and local participation at the January 10 meeting. Sonoma supervisors postponed action on a $5.65 million general obligation bond to cover non federal share. A March 1 deadline looms as hearings begin on a federal appropriation, with locals wary of approval without guaranteed non federal funds.

Phil Trine Home For Christmas With Family

Phil Trine visits home at 28 Talmage road from Oakland Veterans Hospital for Christmas week after five and a half months of hospital therapy for war injuries. Eastern Airliner Crashes Killing 10 GI Passengers

Federal investigators probed why a chartered DC3 carrying 23 servicemen home for Christmas ran out of fuel and plunged into the Monongahela River near Dravosburg Pa ten men died. Nineteen survivors were rescued with cuts and exposure, as searchers recovered the wreckage and began a formal CAB inquiry.

Names Of Men Lost In Plane Crash Released

Dravesburg Pa report lists nine soldiers and crewman missing after the crash. Pilot Harold A Poe of Seattle and aircrewmen Pfe Harry D Moss are named alongside Cpl Robert F Wilder and seven other soldiers. European case tied to misuse of office arrests

In Bern eleven people were arrested in a case described as misuse of office in favor of a foreign power involving economic espionage and fraud. Pilot vanishes after Monongahela River plane crash

DRAVOSBURG Pa UP a DC 3 transport carrying five civilian crew members ditched in the Monongahela River. Pilot Harold Poe reached shore then reentered icy waters to help others, disappeared in the darkness as survivors described his heroism. Co pilot Robert P Walker said he swam to shore and tried to rescue more victims before the craft sank.

French Deputies Move to Block German Rearmament

Paris opponents of German rearmament sought to derail the Western European Union by proposing France and Germany delay ratification until Pacts are read as one. Premier Mendes France planned three confidence votes but backed down for an all night effort to secure unity. He met with Radical Socialist deputies and non Communist leaders to present a united front.

Oakes Named New Head of Mendocino Polio Unit

John L. Oakes of Redwood Valley elected by unanimous vote to succeed Arthur Schilder as chairman of the Mendocino County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at yesterday’s chapter board meeting in Ukiah court house. Oakes, nine years in the area, is county school welfare and attendance supervisor, married with two daughters. County polio cases totaled 34 in 1954, the most in any year, versus 23 in 1953 and 17 in 1952, with three-in-34 being visitors.

Electrical short prompts fire call at Calvert Court home

An electrical short in the city meter at 150 Calvert Court, Harley Bransoh residence, drew the fire department at 9 am today. Chief Albert Bechtel said the meter was damaged but the house remained undamaged.
