Eureka Quake Kills One. 25 Hurt and $2 Million in Damage
A 6.5 magnitude quake struck Eureka California near noon yesterday killing Carl Wilkerson 42 of Arcata and injuring 25 others. Damages ran from 5 000 to 10 000 per store with widespread wreckage downtown including City Hall Court House and Crest building. Aftershocks were mild and likely to continue over the next two to three days prompting authorities to cordon off six blocks and evacuate the Humboldt County courthouse.

Water Council Sets January Meeting Day
Mendocino County Water Council met at the courthouse to close 1954 matters. Northwestern California forecast calls for fair conditions today tonight and Thursday with patches of fog in coastal valleys and little temperature change. Highs around 64 in Ukiah and 49 in Santa Rosa while Napa reaches 48 and lows dip to 35 32 and 39 respectively with winds 7 to 15 mph along the coast. Chase at 100 MPH Helps Patrolman
A 15 mile chase ending in Hopland last night at 10 o'clock saw Earl Franklin Drumm, 22, a U S Coast Guardsman from Point Mendocino, cited for reckless driving and excessive speed after driving a Ford at over 100 mph at times. He was stopped by a California Highway Patrol officer in Hopland and directed to appear before Judge J F Manning on January 5.

Lions Entertain Nearly 1000 At Ukiah Theatre Party
Almost 1000 children from Ukiah and surrounding areas attended the Ukiah Lions Club Christmas party at the Ukiah Theater. The program started at 10 am with cartoons and features, Rudolph on stage, and two dances by Mrs Bubble Griffin's class. Santa greeted the kids in the lobby as they left, distributing candy and oranges.

Fog Causes Wreck On Talmage Road
An early morning rear end collision on Talmage Road sent Vern A. Friesen's Ford from Reedley to the tow and damaged Edith Sanford's car from Ukiah as she left for Mendocino State Hospital. The 7:15 a.m. crash, blamed on dense fog by Patrolman Warren Truitt, left both vehicles damaged with no injuries.

County Planners Urge Ford Road Improvements
The county planning commission voted to recommend county participation in improving Ford Road intersection with the state highway north of Ukiah.
