A sharp tremor rocked Eureka California knocking chimneys and windows and felling light fixtures. City officials reported no immediate injuries though a loud explosion-like sound accompanied the quake according to Humboldt Daily Standard staff.
Superior Court judge Lilburn Gibson rules in favor of Martin Wener in the case against the City of Ukiah. The court states the city must permit water extraction from the existing pipe on the Lot 40 property for domestic use, with meters to be installed to measure consumption. The decision follows disputes over a meter removed by city employees and the line being blanked off.

Wilbur Taylor of Woodland drove an Autocar and semi trailer loaded with lumber south on the Redwood highway near Calpella when brakes set for a right turn caused the trailer to rock and overturn. No injuries. Load scattered and Taylor received speeding and load spillage tickets. Truck owned by George Vochatzer of Eureka. Another noninjury crash occurred 50 feet south of the Calpella post office when Lora Mosley backed a Ford into Dorothy Cave’s Willys. Patrolman Stultz cited Miss Mosley for due caution failure.
Ukiah Fire Department uses its air raid siren to summon volunteers to fires while awaiting a replacement horn. The council authorized a new horn after the old fire horn broke down beyond repair. Until the new horn arrives the siren wail will signal fire calls.
The board of supervisors continued action on allowing predatory animal control personnel to capture or exterminate livestock killing dogs to January 24 at 2 p.m. for further discussion and decision.
The county supervisors rejected the 13 bids for the million dollar county hospital and ordered re-advertisement. Bid differences with the second low bid exceed $20,000, and federal and state funding rules limit covering the excess. Opening set for January 24. District Attorney James E. Busch urged resubmission, noting Utah Construction Company failed to list subcontractors.
London reports Britain will not abandon German rearma ment and tells Russia to scrap their 1942 friendship treaty if the Soviets want to. A Foreign Office spokesman condemned Russia threat to void the pact and warned Britain would regret any cancellation of the Anglo Soviet treaty. The Russia threat was presented to British Ambassador Sir William Hayter in Moscow.
Journal sponsored Christmas decoration contest in Ukiah will be judged tonight from 7 to 10. Residents with exterior lights should keep them on. Judges will be followed by photographers to capture winners. Prizes: 25, 15, and 10 dollars. Winners announced December 24 per publisher B A Cober.
Dr Charles Laughead said a space a message saved Chicago from tidal waves and earthquakes predicting doomsday. He and co leader Mrs Dorothy Martin believed in imminent world end while awaiting further messages. Authorities noted the pronouncement as a failed apocalyptic forecast and Chicago remained unharmed.
Round Valley ranchers and Mendocino National Forest officials pressed the supervisors to transfer 53 000 acres into the late season deer district adjoining the area on the east and north. The board postponed a decision pending further study and talks with pro and con groups.
An estimated ten second rolling earthquake at 11 59 a m disrupted Redwood Valley injuring none but causing fear as trees poles and wires swayed. The Humboldt courthouse was closed as unsafe and power lines phones and teletypes failed. A woman was trapped in an elevator as the Standard building composer room was wrecked and seismographs showed strong activity near the San Andreas fault. The quake was described as among the worst in recent years.
Northwestern California shows fair conditions today and tonight with increasing cloudiness in the extreme north and local morning fog. Inland areas warm on Wednesday with highs around Ukiah 60 and lows near 34, while coastal winds remain 8 to 16 mph. Fort Bragg region also fair with variable winds and similar temperatures.
Four sheep from a Nativity scene escaped in Washington shortly after President Eisenhower lit the city Christmas tree. They scampered down a busy street, snarling traffic until a motorcycle officer corralled them. The president wished Merry Christmas to service members abroad, expressing hope for peace and goodwill in the new year.
Late Flashes dispatch reports Dr Samuel H Sheppard found guilty of second degree murder in the bludgeoning death of his pregnant wife. Jury foreman delivered the verdict to Common Pleas Judge Edward Blythin who read the form in court. Life imprisonment with parole eligibility after ten years. In Formosa, Chinese bombed Tachen Island in the first air strike since the defense pact. In New York, Standard Tungsten Corp officials face arraignment for alleged mall fraud.
London reports Britain signed a treaty joining the European coal and steel community, the Schuman Plan precursor. Duncan Sandys signed for Britain, with Monnet signing for the High Authority. The pact creates a common coal and steel market and aims to curb European conflict via economic integration.
