NEW YORK. Hank Aaron and Ed Mathews of the Milwaukee Braves won the NL batting honors for 1959. Aaron topped with a .355 average, 223 hits, and 400 total bases, earning his second batting title. Mathews hit 46 homers, his second home run crown. Ernie Banks led the Cubs with 143 RBIs and tied Mathews for the homers at 45 before Mathews belted a 46th in the Braves Dodgers playoff.
The Indianapolis Speedway, built with 3,200,000 bricks, hosts the first official 500 mile race from 1911. Ray Harroun won that inaugural event with an average speed of 74.59 mph.
Billy Cannon of Louisiana State swept the United Press International post season honors earning Back of the Year after already being named UPI Player of the Year. He led the 1959 All America voting with 167 votes to 52 for Richie Lucas of Penn State and 346 ballots were cast. Ron Burton of Northwestern finished third with 18 votes.

Brown finished 293 yards ahead of J D Smith of San Francisco as Ollie Matson and Tom Tracy followed. Conerly led a strong group including Hal Morrall and Johnny Unitas in the passing race.
The 1960 Olympic Games in Rome will run from August 24 to September 11, opening with ceremony in Rome and ending on September 11.
Wiss Don Hutson of the Green Bay Packers led the National Football League in scoring for five straight seasons from 1940 to 1944. His 138 points in 1942 remain an NFL single season record.
