Sam Jones of the Philadelphia Phillies topped the NL in ERA at 2.82 and edged teammates Stu Miller and Bob Buhl in a close race for the league’s best pitcher. Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette joined the 20 win club, Spahn reaching 20 wins for a 10th time and Burdette posting a 4.07 ERA. Elroy Face of the Pirates posted 18-1 with 2.71 ERA in 57 games, though he did not qualify for the ERA lead.
Syracuse University led the NCAA in total offense 451.5 yards per game and rushing offense 313.6, while its defense allowed 96.2 yards per game and yielded 21 points in 70 games. The Orangemen also held top marks in forward passing efficiency and scoring margin, finishing ahead of Mississippi Alabama Brigham Young and Stanford in various categories. Syracuse is the first Eastern team other than Army to win the total offense crown in decades.

The memory recalls Stuhldreher once a Four Horsemen star at Notre Dame. The Masonite tourney uses a cannon start with 40 golfers in 10 foursomes to finish 36 holes. Capt. Gordon Hill's team leads after 18 holes while Ernie Banker has the low gross 74 and Will Moschetti the low net 61.
New York Knicks add forward Mike Farmer back to the lineup after a hip injury sidelined him seven games. Cal Ramsey, acquired from the Hawks, joins the roster as the Knicks prepare to face the St. Louis Hawks at Madison Square Garden. Ramsey scored 80 points in six games for New York University prior to the decision.
UPI college basketball ratings list Cincinnati atop with 4-0 and 26 first place votes, followed by Ohio State 5-0, West Virginia 5-0, California 3-0, North Carolina 3-0, St. Louis 4-1, Utah 4-0, Bradley 3-0, Kansas 2-1, Southern Cal 4-2, with Indiana Georgia Tech Kentucky Iowa Illinois North Carolina State tied and others listed with points and records.
Frank Sobrero the 6 foot 3 inch guard drives passing and rebounding to set up at least 14 shots for teammates but is limited to 10 points as Santa Clara beats Hawaii 70 47. Jim Russi leads scorers. Gonzaga falls 69 67 to Washington State. Pepperdine tops Regis 61 57.
Santa Rosa Rifle Club defeats Ukiah 969 to 868 in a North Bay League match. Vic Zimin led Santa Rosa with 198 of 200, narrowly edging Ken Cummins 197 and Bob Woods 196. Rod Palmer 193 and Irvin Brown 193 also helped Ukiah.
Norm Van Brocklin of the Eagles and Bobby Lane of the Steelers headline the Eastern Conference All Stars for the January 17 Pro Bowl at the Coliseum. Frank Gifford leads the Giants, and Jim Brown anchors the Browns as the East fills a 32 man roster with coach Buck Shaw to add one more selection.
Al Lawrence and John Macy of the University of Houston finished first and second in the National AAU cross country championship 10 000 meters with Lawrence clocking 32 minutes 22.4 seconds in Louisville Kentucky.
San Francisco forty Niners president Vic Morabito denied reports that R C Owens Fred Dugan Jim Ridlon and Dick Moegle planned to jump to the AFL The players also denied the rumor while saying they might consider playing elsewhere next year if not offered contracts. Morabito stressed the team holds options through May 1 1969 and would not release the four without waivers
World featherweight champion Davey Moore easily outboxed Hilario Morales in a non title bout, knocking Morales down in round one and winning by unanimous decision as both fighters traded strong blows throughout the bout at an San Francisco arena before 2,374 fans.
Sid Gillman, fired by the Los Angeles Rams after a 2 10 season, said Monday night he would take the job again if offered. He faced sharp criticism for the poor record.
