University of Hawaii marine biologist Louis Hérman says replacements for Puka and Kea, freed in a theft case, will be 3 to 4 year old female Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Training to reach their level will take about two years with a $140 000 NSF grant funding.

City Plans Big Zoning Shakeup with Density Cuts

Public hearings will study a plan cutting maximum density to 18 units per acre in C-1 and from 43 to 18 in R-4, eliminating apartments in commercial zones. R-3 and R-4 will add site permits, new zones include manufacturing and office, and planners seek conformance with the general plan.

Witness Adams testifies in Hurt arson trial with immunity granted

Jonell Adams, alleged mistress of Otis Hurt, began testimony after receiving immunity from perjury. She said she did not set the fire, visited the Lake Mendocino Drive home the night of the blaze, and described office smells and new furnishings. Adams claimed deputies pressured her and indicated Hurt’s wife Shirley was a suspect, and she was jailed after refusing to answer if she started the fire. Hurt faces arson charges from the Aug 20, 1976 incident. trial in Superior Court, Judge Timothy O'Brien.

Welcome rain boosts total to 10.18 inches in Ukiah

Ukiah received 1.07 inches of rain from a passing weather front on Sunday raising the unofficial yearly total to 10.18 inches by 8 a.m. The rain began around 7 a.m. and produced a torrential downpour with fast gutter water and large puddles. The 0.18 inch increase puts Ukiah about three inches ahead of last year at this date.

Middle East talks active in Cairo with Vance in tow

United States envoy Cyrus Vance resumed a Middle East tour visiting Cairo and Amman as Egypt and Israel hold bargaining sessions this week. Anwar Sadat blasted neighboring Arab states while Hafez Assad urged a boycott of the talks. Jordan’s King Hussein eyed joining the Cairo discussions as Washington presses for broader Arab participation and Israel concessions.

Woman Charged With Murder In Chicago Infant's Death

Airlana Lawrence 26 was charged with murder after her 3 month old daughter Wendy died from injuries after being thrown from a closed window of their three story Chicago apartment. Police said the attack occurred while the couple slept early Sunday and Lawrence reportedly told her common law husband Jerry Campbell 26 she no longer wanted the child. The infant died shortly after at St Bernard Hospital.
