Washington reports the Transportation Department proposes tougher fuel economy rules for 1980 model year vehicles. The plan, led by Joan Claybrook, could raise sticker prices by up to 160 while cutting fuel bills by about 760 over 12 years, saving 12 billion gallons and 2.7 billion dollars.
California Farm Bureau officials say a nationwide farmers strike would not measurably raise California prices since the state is not a major wheat or corn producer. They add any effect would likely occur at retail, not grower, level, and oppose participation by their 79,000 members citing antitrust laws. Government cooperation to move exports is seen as necessary for higher prices.
The 60 voice Mendocino College Choir under Phil Bertsch performs a varied concert at First Baptist Church in Ukiah with pieces from The Creation Messiah and Haydn Imperial Mass. The choir joins five area programs as Ukiah schools stage Christmas shows and 134 Ukiah students head to Phoenix for the Fiesta Bowl Parade.

Attorney Richard Petersen plans to open the defense for Otis Hurt as the trial nears mid afternoon while Jonell Adams is briefly jailed then granted immunity for perjury. Adams testified she was at the Lake Mendocino Drive home before the blaze and faced questions about setting the fire as prosecutors plan to call Lambert and tax officials as witnesses.
The first U.S. prisoners repatriated from Mexican jails were released in San Diego amid jubilant family reunions. By day’s end up to 41 of 235 prisoners were expected free. several others remained in custody facing additional charges.
