Four female prisoners recaptured after Florida escape

Four women including a murderess and two with attempted murder convictions escaped from a Florida prison and held a hostage, Mrs. Elizabeth Peeler, at knifepoint. The group was found under an oak tree near Williston after a day in the cold. Peeler, released unharmed, kept her humor despite binders as law enforcement launched a large manhunt.

Lake County Grand Jury cites auditor office mismanagement

The outgoing Lake County Grand Jury reports serious mismanagement in the auditor-controller's office before the current auditor. It cites unpaid warrants, out of date ledgers, unrealized revenues and improper advances, urging reorganizing the office to tighten internal controls. The jury also discusses budget impacts under a balanced budget and calls for a public information officer.

Rockets Hit PLO Headquarters in Beirut Attacks

Rockets launched from car rooftops, remotely exploded near the PLO headquarters and two affiliated offices in Beirut causing heavy damage. Four people were injured as authorities blamed foreign actors and noted potential forged passports on rental cars.

Britain and France clash over budget concessions at European summit

At the European summit in Paris, Prime Minister Harold Wilson pressed for Britain to pay a smaller share of the Common Market budget, while President Valery Giscard d Estaing rejected the idea. Nine leaders recessed after talks failing to resolve the issue. A $1.2 billion unemployment fund was agreed for member countries including Italy Ireland and Britain.

Mills resigns Ways and Means chair due to ill health

UPI reports Representative Wilbur D. Mills of Arkansas will surrender the chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee after 16 years. Speaker Carl Albert said Mills, 65, is treated at Bethesda Naval Hospital for exhaustion and may resign from the committee or Congress later depending on his medical status.

Community Christmas Effort seeks donations for Ukiah area

For the 23rd year the Community Christmas Effort collects canned and fresh foods clothing and toys to aid disadvantaged families in the Ukiah area. Donations of non glass items and intact toys are welcomed at 124 Court Street under chairman Erwin Martin with help from Jack Simpson Elma Raches and Vivian Martin.
