Beirut, Lebanon. The government declares a 24 hour curfew in the capital to halt a weekend outbreak of kidnapings and executions that left over 100 dead. Security forces struggle to restore order as violence continues in the civil conflict between Christian and Moslem factions.
An enterprising gentleman advertised free government land and fled his Ukiah apartment at 155 Laws Avenue before a citation hearing for false advertising. Deputy District Attorney Jon Lehan waits as readers who replied to the Government Land Survey offer seek details on 640 acre Alaskan and 160 acre regional homesteads. The flyer touts 320 acres in Idaho Utah New Mexico and other western states, plus Canadian options and a link to Bureau of Land Management homesteading guidance.
In Amsterdam a mediator failed after two hours of talks to win release for four children held at gunpoint in the Indonesian consulate while over 20 other hostages face continued captivity. A second siege, near Beilen, involves 31 people aboard a hijacked two-car train, the longest in Dutch history. Authorities tightened security as negotiations falter and the gunmen demand Dutch backing for South Moluccan independence.
Four IRA gunmen trapped in Dorset Square refuse a police offer to swap food and cigarettes for the hostage couple Mrs. and Mr. Matthews. Police press the siege with no deal while the gunmen demand a plane to Ireland and threaten to kill the hostages if a rescue is attempted. Michael Wilson is named as Britain’s most wanted man linked to area bombings and Ross McWhirter’s murder.
The Ukiah city council race sees Mary Snyder as the second candidate to file, with Leé Enemark already on paper as the first. Ted Feibusch has opened papers as the seventh, while incumbents await action, and other nominees include Jim Weller Maurice Cox Jr Wallace Behm and Daniel Hamburg. Feibusch pushes private funding for downtown beautification and seeks limits on redevelopment agency life span tax increments and project boundaries.
The Greater Ukiah Chamber of Commerce board adopted a resolution opposing the purchase of 74 000 acres for the Redwood National Park citing adverse effects on the timber industry. LP owns 31 000 acres and warned a mill closure risking 1 000 jobs. New officers to be installed January 17 at Lake Mendocino Clubhouse.
Ukiah activists report mixed results as the state commission rejected a one-trout limit on the Trinity Klamath and Salmon rivers, kept 10 fish in upper reaches, and approved five fish limits in lower rivers.
