Museum budget cuts eyed as supervisors weigh schedule, meals

County board backs a 5377 transfer for Willits museum to cover year end expenses beyond a 13800 budget with 2300 earmarked for utilities. They may cut the seven day week to six or five days in winter while delaying hospital cafeteria closure to next week.

Snow brings heavy blanket to Mendocino highlands

In Mendocino County higher elevations report widespread snow from a cold front sweeping the Pacific Coast. Laytonville has four inches, Sherwood Road west of Willits three inches with slush, Covelo a foot, and Mina Road north of Covelo closed. Bell Springs Road closed, Spy Rock and Dos Rios only passable with chains. Road crews aid stranded cars and monitor Potter Valley, Eel River grade. San Francisco reports blizzard warnings for Sierra Nevada from Lake Tahoe northward, gusts up to 60 mph, and temps from 15 to 0. Main roads remain open with chains or snow tread tires required on many routes including I-80 Donner Pass.

Northwestern California forecast calls for rain or snow tonight and Thursday forenoon, clearing Thursday afternoon. Snow may be locally heavy in the mountains. Arena nuclear plant site perils detailed

A Sierra Club spokesman told Ukiah Rotary Club that PG E abandoned plans for a Point Arena nuclear plant due to USGS findings of earthquake hazards near the site. David Pesonen, an opponent of PG E projects at Bodega Head and Point Arcana, said PG E suppressed earthquake data in its report to the AEC and that the USGS report placed the site near the San Andreas fault with crustal slippage and a horizontal fault evidence.

PG&E not withdrawing Point Arena plant permit now

PG&E spokesman denied withdrawing the 800 million nuclear plant permit near Point Arena, asserting continued applications to the California Public Utilities Commission and Atomic Energy Commission and to the North Coast Regional Commission once formed. He cited a 30 month Stanford and Earth Sciences Associates study showing negligible ground displacement along the San Andreas fault but possible strong ground shaking at the Mendocino site, advising design consideration for severe motion.

Doctors express concern for Truman's recovery

Former President Harry S Truman, 88, lay seriously ill in Kansas City with pulmonary congestion and bronchitis complicated by arterial sclerosis. County considers ordinance on motor vehicle use in unincorporated areas

Board of supervisors schedules a 4 p.m. December 19 discussion not a hearing on a proposed county ordinance banning motor vehicles including motorcycles and minibikes from unincorporated land except on owner permitted or occupied property and while active for lawful profit. The Ukiah Rod and Gun Club urged action citing property damage and a public nuisance. The rule targets off road vehicles with defective mufflers or altered noise or safety features.
