Ukiah high school hosts a get acquainted dinner for Ukiah and Potter Valley faculty Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the cafeteria as the new school year nears. About 50 teachers and administrators are expected. Freshmen and new students register Wednesday and Thursday with classes starting Tuesday at 8:35 a.m. on Sept 1.
Diplomatic dispatches from Moscow indicate Soviet preparation for defense alignment with Egypt as the Suez crisis escalates. Egypt’s Nasser meets the five-nation Menzies committee amid Franco-British buildup and U.S. caution.
The Division of Highways said it would call bids this week on projects in Mendocino County to restore 5.7 miles of storm damaged highway at 33 locations on U S 101 between Leggett Valley and Miranda and on Whittemore Grove State Park Road at Redwood Creek bridge. Estimated cost $617,000.
Four people were killed during a hospital siege in Nicosia as Cypriot gunmen, mingling with patients, attempted to free a suspected EOKA member, Polycarios Georghadius, 25. British troops surrounded the hospital and hundreds searched for the escapee after a seven minute firefight with submachine guns and pistols.
Cairo reports the prosecutor will seek capital punishment for three Britons arrested on spying charges tied to plans against President Nasser. Two British diplomats implicated were expelled. Britain expelled two Egyptian diplomats as relations sink amid Suez talks. The suspects include James Swinburn, Charles Pittuck, and James Zarb, with four Egyptians jailed and more arrests anticipated.
Northwestern California shows fair weather through Saturday with coastal fog and low clouds at night and morning. Inland temperatures rise today with Napa 83 to 52, Ukiah 90 to 44, Santa Rosa 80 to 50 as coastal winds vary 7 to 15 mph.

Robert Jensen 33 well known Willits lumberman shot himself in the chin with a .22 rifle at his Sherwood Hill home yesterday afternoon. He was found by his son Robert Jensen Jr. a visiting Medford resident. A post mortem was planned. no clear motive. Services will be at Cypress Lawn cemetery. Jensen held stock in Timber Conservation Co and had dealings with Point Amea Shipping and Timber Co.
Joe Marshall of Willits and Carl Melton of Laytonville are in Howard hospital at Willits in satisfactory condition. They work as loggers for Emery Logging Company and were loading logs at Rockport Thursday when struck by a spreader during the noon hour.
Bevard of Exeter driving a Plymouth sedan collided with a lumber truck at State and Perkins street Thursday night. He said brake failure caused him to veer left to avoid a collision and struck an International truck and trailer piloted by Warren Erb of Eureka. The crash occurred at 9 15 p m.
Millview supporters led by Attorney John Golden challenge city water claims ahead of a Board of Supervisors hearing on boundary lines. Golden argues the city cannot meet future needs and notes funding would rely on revenue bonds rather than assessments, warning street work and gas services may lag.
Howard Curly Owens commander of district one of the American Legion Depart ment of California will fly to Los Angeles for the national convention. More than 10 000 Legionnaires are expected to attend and hear addresses by Vice President Nixon and Adlai Stevenson the Democratic presidential hopeful.
County supervisors asked the state for a temporary county prison camp lease on Camp 20 along the Willits Fort Bragg road. If reconditioning costs exceed 2000 to 3000 dollars they may decline. DA Mele Orchard doubts the camp will be operable after 1957 and notes a forestry camp will be built nearby next summer.
President Eisenhower said the Russians detonated another large atomic device in southwest Siberia Thursday morning. He noted last week's test yielded under a megaton and said a definite yield for Thursday would await Atomic Energy Commission review. He spoke at his first pre campaign news conference, touching on the Suez Treaty and his campaign travel plans.
