Vessel Wreckoff Fort Bragg Claims Five Rescued

The 75 foot fishing vessel Achille Paladini ran aground in fog off Cloyne Beach at low tide. Skipper Ted Bryer refused to abandon ship and rescued the ship’s papers as the craft broke up. Five men all from San Francisco were saved by Fort Bragg deputies and firemen. four were treated and released.

County fair in Boonville to pay $53 261 in premiums

Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show manager Austin Hulbert announces $53 261.50 in premiums for the Boonville event on September 28 to 30.10 The program lists divisions for light horse beef cattle dairy cattle swine sheep and more with diverse special exhibits and entertainment.

Clinton High School Quiet After Racial Tensions

National guardsmen monitored Clinton High School in Tennessee as nine Negro students returned to classes amid jeers from white youths. Absences rose, and attendance fell to about half the usual crowd. Violence occurred in nearby Oliver Springs where a Negro shot a white man, but Clinton reported no fresh outbreaks and troops remained vigilant.

Nixon's Father Lapses Into Coma Near Death

In La Habra California Vice President Richard M Nixon's 77 year old father Frank A Nixon has slipped into a coma with doctors saying death is a matter of time. Dr I N Kraushaar noted the heart remains strong and that revival is possible but unlikely. Brother Dr Ernest Nixon was en route from the East and hoped to lift his father's spirits.

Timber Fires Near Willits Laytonville Brought Under Control

Two brush and timber fires over the weekend were contained. A 35 acre blaze six miles east of Willits was controlled late Monday afternoon after crews of 55 men from San Quentin High Rock and Parlen Forks labored on timber and slash damage. A second fire six miles north of Laytonville, which had scorched over 400 acres, was also contained with 16 workers and eight bulldozers, six rented, used in the effort.

Ukiah assistant civil engineer Jim Mummert resigns to join the city of Hayward. He will start at 495 dollars monthly, higher than his current pay, with potential to reach 603 dollars. Ukiah had offered 502 dollars and a top of 553 dollars. The move opens Bay Area educational opportunities.

Woman Shot by Son During Hunting Trip

Mary Jane Desroches, 32, of Ukiah, was wounded in the leg when her 10-year-old son Henry Lewis accidentally fired a 30-30 rifle while on a hunting trip 18 miles east of the Eel River ranger station on the Mendocino-Glenn county line. Husband Henry E. Desroches had handed the rifle to the boy believing it unloaded. She was flown to Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits and reported in good condition.

Grass fire reported at 627 Grove Street

Fire crews respond to a grass fire Monday at 2 45 p m on L McCulloch property located at 627 Grove Street. The blaze damaged surrounding grass and required investigation into possible causes. No injuries reported and no further details available.

Water Skier Drowns on Clear Lake Holiday Fatality

An Oakland man Frederick Henry Wulfert, 40, drowned while skiing on Clear Lake two miles north of Lakeport. He lost his life jacket when the tow rope broke on a sharp turn behind a boat driven by Martin Jerrick, 33. Lakeport volunteers recovered the body about an hour later.

Three Injured in Labor Day Lake County Crashes

Lake county records three injury crashes over the Labor Day weekend with no highway fatalities. At Highway 20 and 52, Frank Rhein and Buddy Johnson collided as Rhein made a left turn from the shoulder. Injured were Juanita Curtis and Amanda Ford. Paul Fontane and two San Francisco guests were hospitalized after a northbound crash. A Sunday side swipe near Scotts Valley road injured Kenneth Anderson Warren Purcell and Luther Gow.

Correction: Ealy testimony at inquest on two youths

Minor accidents mark three day Ukiah holiday period

Ukiah area traffic through the three day Mars holiday saw only minor crashes. Jack Wherton of Santa Rosa received a citation for driving intoxicated and speeding after his car rear ended Shelben Cassleman’s vehicle near the Forsythe Creek bridge. Cassleman fled the scene. both drivers sustained minor injuries. A separate crash on the Redwood highway injured 17 year old William Monaghan of Sacramento who was a passenger in Francis McComb’s car.

The vacation of Chief of Police and Mrs George Smith was interrupted at Medford Oregon when Mrs Smith missed a stop at a filling station and was thrown to the paving. She was so badly shaken by the fall that they returned home three days later.

Retired career diplomat Angus Ward testifies to the Senate Internal Security subcommittee that a State Department superior ordered him to present a one sided view of Nationalist China in 1948.
