Record-Setting 1976 Redwood Empire Junior Livestock Auction

At Ukiah Fairgrounds the Redwood Empire Fair posted new records as 158 beef, swine, and lambs sold for 57,806.05 dollars. Grand champion steer and lamb honors went to Potter Valley 4-H and Willits 4-H respectively, with top purchases by Jim Duarte and Joe Mayfield. Multiple awards and rate-of-gain winners were announced at Sunday’s breakfast with Rod Shippey presenting.

Americans slain in Tehran ambush by Islamic Marxist guerrillas

In Tehran three American civilians died when gunmen blocked their car and sprayed it with bullets. Victims were William Cottrell, Robert Krongard, and Donald Smith, all linked to Rockwell International and an Iranian Air Force project. A red Volkswagen and a Paykan sedan were noted as the getaway car details. The ambush marks a rare attack on American civilians in Iran.

Willits council approves five cent tax increase

Willits City Council met in a shortened session with Mayor Porro and City Attorney Nazarek absent. The budget for the new fiscal year was approved, including a $6,000 line for police vehicles but a bid process must now be used for the Woodruff Chevrolet lease. A five cent tax rate hike to 1.97 was adopted, and bids were authorized for the Valley Street bridge project and softball diamond lighting. Diane Mann resigned from the Recreation Commission. In Hanford Washington a chemical explosion contaminated 8 to 10 people with radioactive material at the Hanford plant.

Potter Valley Man Killed In Offroad Vehicle Crash

A 70 year old Potter Valley man, Chester Earl Pickle, died Sunday at 5 20 p m after being thrown from his westbound vehicle on a steep dirt road near Guntley Ranch east of East Potter Valley Road California Highway Patrol reports say the car skidded down the mountain rolled over and burst into flames his body burned near the wreckage services are pending at Eversole Mortuary in Ukiah

Milpitas Man Dies in Lake County Collision

A crash on Highway 29 south of Grange Road killed Milpitas resident Albert Temple Hall, 43, when his camper and pickup were sideswiped by a Vallejo driver, James Ray White, 29. Three Hall passengers were injured and Hall died hours after hospitalization. White crossed the centerline. all survivors treated at Redbud Hospital. A separate Ukiah General Hospital death followed a Lakeport Boulevard crash involving Herbert Davenport Butler, 38, who died after his car hit a pole and caused a power line collapse.

Potter Valley trustee race hinges on Ukiah district split vote

Fifteen hopefuls compete in a hotly contested Potter Valley trustee race with the Nov 2 vote deciding if the area secedes from the Ukiah Unified district. Filing closed with 13 candidates. a split village shows potential for fourth or fifth place to gain seats. If reunification passes and Thornton is seated, the incumbent would resign from the Unified board, delaying a new board until March.
