Mendocino Board Dispute Prompted Mandamus Move

Ukiah attorney George Hunter said he will file an alternative writ of mandamus in Superior Court alleging Mendocino County supervisors abused their discretion in a recent vote. The confrontation involved heated exchanges with Mrs. O Laughlin and Chairman Ernie Banker over representation, advisory commissions, and land use matters connected to Las Brisas No 3.

Smith's Shoes Opens Orchard Plaza Store in Ukiah

Smith's Shoes and Orchard Plaza, Inc announce a lease for a 4000 square foot family store at Orchard Plaza Shopping Center in Ukiah. The move from 1959 roots aims to expand dress casual orthopedic work and children shoes with free parking, opening March 1, 1977. Other tenants include Longs Drug and Farmers Supermarket in the eight and a half acre development.

Lake County budget adopted despite court order

Lakeport California supervisors approved a 1976 77 budget of 12.4 million on a 3 to 2 vote increasing last year by 600 thousand citing higher insurance costs. They raised the general tax rate to 2.43 per 100 assessed value despite a court order not to adopt until salary arbitrations and alignment with comparable counties. The LCEA contends bad faith and seeks contempt proceedings. negotiations continue without a proposed pay raise. Supervisors Ellis and Gordon dissented.

Manslaughter Verdict in Lakeport Slaying Case

William Taylor, 21, found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the July 3 stabbing death of Ronald Maata, 21, in a Lakeport drive-in parking lot. The panel deliberated for nearly a day after six men and six women heard testimony. sentencing set for Sept. 20. Jurors asked the judge to explain verdict options during deliberations.

Lake County Fair opens Labor Day weekend in Lakeport

The Lake County Fair kicks off Thursday evening September 2 with a Bicentennial theme Let Freedom Ring Horizons at the Lakeport fairgrounds and runs through Sunday September 5. Highlights include the Miss Lake County Pageant, a 4 H livestock auction, stage shows, cow and sheep contests, a boatload of family activities, and a grand talent show finale. Proceeds fund scholarships and county merchants sponsor prize drawings including an electric freezer.
