Goldin Promoted Bonds Amid Impending NYC Crisis

Comptroller Harrison J. Goldin defended promoting city bonds despite a looming fiscal crisis saying bondholders would be paid first even if city funds were empty. The SEC charged him with deceptive practices along with Mayor Beame and major banks in late 1974 and 1976. Both Beame and Goldin seek re election.

U S Embassy Fire in Moscow Raises Security Questions

A weekend blaze at the U S Embassy in Moscow drew hundreds of Soviet firefighters and a U S team of Navy Seabees Marines and engineers to assess upper floors damaged by an eight hour fire. Ambassador Toon said there was no security breach and no sinister backdrop despite access by Soviet crews. Fire began on the eighth floor gutted that level and damaged the ninth, with security vault doors melted by heat.

Northwestern California Fair With Patchy Coastal Drizzle

Forecast shows fair skies through Tuesday for Northwestern California with high clouds in the north and patchy night and morning low clouds along the coast from Cape Mendocino north. Little temperature change expected. Fort Bragg forecasts 55 to 70 degrees and Ukiah 60 to 100.

Fair attendance tops last year's figures at Ukiah fair

The Redwood Empire Fair at the 12th District Fairgrounds in Ukiah ended a four day run with 40 764 attendees an increase of more than 5000 over 1976 Sunday crowds rose to 9115 and events drew large turnouts including a record destruction derby and a high revenue livestock auction Butler Amusements reported its largest Ukiah crowd ever on Sunday.

Young sniper victim laid to rest in Hackettstown

Fourteen year old David Galvin, the youngest of six sniper victims, is buried as authorities probe motive for the shootings in Hackettstown and Mansfield Township. Emile Benoist, 20, killed himself after a manhunt as police closed in.

Palace Hotel Sold to Laytonville Resident

The Palace Hotel at N State and Smith Streets is sold to Peter Wells of Laytonville and Willits, representing a buyers’ group, for over 400000. Seller is Vince Sisco of Fort Bragg, ex Ukiah. former owners include Lal Bhakta and Walter Sandelin. Wells plans full refurbishment and restoration of the historic property.

Man jumps from hotel fire escape in Ukiah incident

A 22-year-old man at the Palace Hotel jumped from a fire escape about 10 feet above ground at 6 p.m. He was rescued by bystanders and taken to Ukiah General for X rays before being released. Police investigate another suspected death by own action as deputies find a 64-year-old woman dead in her bed with a bottle of aspirin nearby.
