Gallo Winery expands its local pear purchases in Mendocino and Lake Counties for a new economy wine blend. Contracts vary with delivery at orchards or packing houses paying growers $48 to $72 per ton. the fruit is pressed into juice at Modesto for a low priced line.

Laura VanderMey Crowned 1977 Redwood Empire Fair Queen

Laura Kay VanderMey, 16, named 1977 Miss Redwood Empire Queen at the Redwood Empire Fair amid showers and a near-capacity crowd. First runner-up Laura Ann Albert, second runner-up Teri Ann Bell, with Bell tying for Miss Congeniality with Treva Gregory. Pageant featured two emcees and performances by Charlotte Colombini as well as a full slate of fair events through Sunday.

Ukiah Valley Receives Light Rain During Harvest

A gentle 0.18 inch shower dampened Ukiah area skies as Mendocino and Lake County pear harvests continue toward a September finish. UFG president Bill Cornett calls the rain beneficial for air clarity while noting a 10 000 to 12 000 ton pear yield and 200 worker packing shed. Bruce Bearden cites possible bunch rot in area grapes and minor spraying may occur. This was the first measurable rainfall of the year starting July 1. last measured May 26.

Weather across Northwestern California shows fair conditions through Saturday with variable coastal cloudiness. Inland areas warm up with Fort Bragg near 52 rising to 65 and Ukiah from 52 to 80 degrees, signaling a warm weekend ahead.

Fifteen Testify On Downtown Ukiah Rezoning Plan

About fifteen residents testified at a Wednesday night Ukiah city planning commission hearing on rezoning 32 blocks downtown from R-2 to R-1 and R-3 to R-2, with supporters citing preservation of single family homes and Victorians. Opponent attorney Don Hinkle argued higher development potential under current plans. The commission paused the matter to Sept 14 and reviewed other items including a 40 unit proposal at 148 Gibson Street, a bottling plant at Vichy Springs Road, and an urban berm proposal for Redwood Health Club facing freeway proximity. The panel discussed brick theme standards for downtown and a five year capital improvements program, with an informal Sept 22 dinner to discuss the state Urban Development Strategy report.

Senate tax relief faces uphill Senate vote

Sacramento Republicans said the 4.4 billion property tax relief plan is highly unlikely to pass the Senate. They claimed all 14 Republicans in the 40 member chamber would vote no, with some Democrats also indicating opposition. The stalled conference actions on the tax bill and a 3.9 billion school finance measure fuel uncertainty as lawmakers seek more information. It requires 27 votes for passage.
